WIN 36-12
The South Sydney Rabbitohs have responded to their critics in the best way possible, running out winners tonight (Friday) 36 points to 12 against the Penrith Panthers in front of 9,017 Members and supporters at ANZ Stadium. Five-eighth John Sutton scored a double for the Rabbitohs in a powerful display, with the Rabbitohs running in six tries to the Panthers two. Also impressive was the Rabbitohs’ clean score sheet in the first half, leading 20 points to nil at the break. The Rabbitohs were on fire early, scoring a try through second-rower Eddy Pettybourne in just the third minute of play. A straight and direct charge at the line from close range saw him crash over, and Chris Sandow’s conversion gave Souths an early six-nil lead. A penalty goal to Sandow in the 28th minute extended the lead to eight, with Jamie Simpson’s 36th minute try further lengthening the lead. Simpson raced 90 metres after taking an intercept deep in his own territory to give the Rabbitohs a 14-nil lead. It did not finish there for the half, when five-eighth John Sutton carried three defenders over the line with one minute left on the clock to take the Rabbitohs into the sheds at the break with a 20-nil lead. The Rabbitohs were making metres up the middle of the Panthers defence, and the Rabbitohs defence was immaculate in the first 40 minutes, including the team’s little men like Sandow and Issac Luke. Fullback Nathan Merritt added to the Rabbitohs total just three minutes into the second stanza, after a weaving 50 metre run which had the Panthers defence in tatters. An offload from Shannan McPherson created the opportunity for Merritt who took the score line to 26-nil. Panthers fullback Jarrod Sammut was denied a try in the 50th minute by the video referee, however the man upstairs gave his next decision in favour of Penrith when hooker Paul Aiton dived over from dummy half to score. Luke Walsh converted to reduce the deficit to 20 points. The Panthers struck again in the 58th minute through centre Geoff Daniela. In a messy try which saw the ball bounce around after a kick and then get stripped, Daniela was awarded a try on ‘benefit of the doubt’ to bring the away side within 14. The Rabbitohs consolidated, with Sutton scoring his second try in the 69th minute when he took a run from dummy half. A try to Colin Best in the 76th minute which saw Sandow across field and then Best loop around the back to make the extra man finished the scoring at Rabbitohs 36 – Panthers 12. Rabbitohs Head Coach Jason Taylor said the Rabbitohs still have more improvement in them. “It was a much more committed performance tonight,” Taylor said. “This week we adjusted what we’ve been doing and the boys really responded well. “We changed heaps of stuff this week – our pre game, our training times, our meeting times. It was a shakeup of what we were doing. “We needed to switch on for the full 80 minutes and we didn’t get there tonight. Our issues have been mental and we worked hard on concentrating for the full 80 minutes this week. “Tonight we got 40. The first period of the second half wasn’t there, so we need to improve on that. “We’ve been too accepting of our performances which have been below standard. We need to be harder on ourselves. We’ve got to get better. “I had to step up and get more out of the guys. I’ve learnt an enormous amount out of all of this and so have the boys. “This week was an attitude adjustment from our whole team, and we have to keep improving it.” Rabbitohs captain Roy Asotasi said the team took good look at itself this week and took a step forward. “JT (Taylor) got into us. It was the first time he had done it all year really. We let him down, and we let down our team and our Club,” Asotasi said. “We talked about what we had to do and get up for the game. We spoke about playing together for each other, and we showed that we can work together. We’ve got to keep working hard. “One win isn’t enough. We have eight games left and we have to perform in all of them.” Taylor spoke about the contribution of five-eighth John Sutton. “He was excellent tonight,” Taylor said. “He’s the sort of player who’s going to be the one to reap the rewards if we play to our potential in a consistent fashion. “He’s a skilful player and he can sometimes over play his hand. “We were mentally weak until tonight, and he’s one player that can control that as well.” Sutton said he examined his game from last week and realised he had to step up. “I was more switched on this week,” Sutton said. “I really wanted to improve on last week’s performance. JT (Taylor) showed us what we did wrong and I was in most of them. “I thought Issac Luke and Chris Sandow stood up tonight and that helps my game. We’ve got eight games to go so we have to do it from now on. “I expect to play my best every week for the team, and everyone was more focussed this week. “We were always going to come out and prove a point tonight and the boys stood up. We need to continue to do that.”
