A largely reserve-grade South Sydney side has edged out a stronger Parramatta line-up 28-24 at Ringrose Park on Friday night, with England international Tom Burgess leading the way. In each club's first 13-a-side hit-out of 2020, the Eels went in with a far stronger side, naming nine of their likely round one 17 and a total of 16 players with NRL experience. The Rabbitohs had just Tom Burgess of their likely round one team involved, and just five with NRL experience. Wayne Bennett used the trial to put some very big minutes into Burgess, with the England international crashing over for a second-half try. Corey Allan, Jack Johns and Josh Cook were among the impressive performers for the Rabbitohs while former Dragon Hame Sele, on a train-and-trial deal, has done his hopes of a more formal contract no harm with a powerful stint. The Eels also unveiled new signing Jai Field, who has joined the club on a train-and-trial deal and played the second half at fullback. The former Dragon had a tough night, being caught out of position a couple of times and struggling under the high ball. With only Reed Mahoney of the side's first-grade playmakers involved, Rhys Davies and Jaeman Salmon each produced some nice touches. The Eels dominated early with the help of stinging charges from the likes of Marata Niukore, Kane Evans and Shaun Lane. They were camped down the South Sydney end for almost the entirety of the opening 10 minutes and the pressure eventually told with young fullback John Fonua crossing in the 11th minute. Souths got a result from an ugly restart that bounced over Ethan Parry and a big Sele charge was instrumental in setting up the get-square from Jack Johns. The Eels made plenty of changes at the quarter-time break while Souths lost Cory Denniss who stayed down hurt but was able to walk off. Haze Dunster crossed out wide for the Eels straight after the resumption from a nice Reed Mahoney grubber. Re-signed veteran Michael Jennings showed he hasn't lost his pace and swerve with a nice solo try to make it 14-6 after 28. A nice grubber from Souths hooker Josh Cook was pounced on by Corey Allan to keep it close at 14-12 after 35 minutes. A spilled bomb from Fonua handed Souths a free set with a blind side raid saw Ilias setup winger Jaxson Paulo cashing in on an overlap to give Souths the lead for the first time, taking their 18-14 advantage to half-time. Brad Arthur pulled most of his first-grade squad during the break but left a few forwards out to build their minutes and it was Oregon Kaufusi who reclaimed the lead with a big charge at the line. An Eels error on the first handed Souths a chance from the scrum with Corey Allen setting up Paulo for his second and reclaiming the lead at 22-20 after 54 minutes. Souths went further ahead when Field was caught out of position on a 40/20 kick and Tom Burgess crashed over right on the three-quarter drinks break. A scoreless final quarter was in the offing until a late four-pointer to Makahesi Makatoa but it wasn't enough to avert a 28-24 loss.

NSWRL U20 Jersey Flegg Trial
v Parramatta, 5:00pm
WIN 34-22
The South Sydney Rabbitohs Jersey Flegg side have recorded a 34-22 win over the Parramatta Eels at Ringrose Park, Wentworthville. In what was valuable hit out for both sides, it was the Parramatta Eels who would strike first in the third minute and convert to make the score 6-0. From the ensuring kick-off, Souths would kick the ball out on the full to hand Parramatta valuable field position which they would use to full effect, scoring off the next set and converting to make it 12-0 after five minutes. They were back at it shortly afterwards, scoring once more and converting to leave the scores at 18-0 after just ten minutes of play. South Sydney began to find their groove shortly afterwards when some slick passing found Fruean Easthope out wide in the corner. Chaise Robinson would then guide the sideline conversion over with ease. In the 25th minute, hooker Peter Mamouzelos would burrow over from dummy half and with Robinson's boot the scoreboard read 18-12. In a matter of minutes Souths were level after Tevita Taumoepenu got his name on the scoresheet to make the scores 18-18. Two minutes out from half time, Parramatta wrestled the lead back through a four pointer of their own to make it 22-18 at the break. Five minutes into the second stanza, Fruean Easthope was back at it again finishing off another backline movement to lock up the scores once more at 22 a piece. Fullback Chaise Robinson put the Rabbitohs in front for the first time with some excellent support play through the middle with ten minutes remaining, while Ben Lloyd put the game beyond doubt when he strolled through a gap. Robinson's final conversion of the game would make the final score 34-22 in Souths favour.

NSWRL U18 SG Ball - Round 3
v Central Coast, Morry Breen Oval, Sat Feb 22 11:15am
WIN 36-22
Hick was out Jang started at lock. The SG Ball Rabbitohs kicked on from their impressive second half against the Bulldogs last week and registered their first win in the SG Ball Competition for 2020. A strong opening stanza by the Rabbitohs saw them lead the Central Coast Bears 26-10 at half time. Last minute call-up, Braydon Jang, had a debut to remember - scoring two tries while holding it down at Lock. Etuate Laui was a stand-out performer in the front-row for coach Wayne Collins, who repelled everything the Central Coast pack threw at him despite being the host's key 'target man'.

LOSS 6-32
Fisher, Mahe, Flynn are out. Frintzilas started on the wing, Isaia-Hardy in the second row, Tapeli and White on the bench. It was another tough day in the office for Gaven Sheehan's Harold Matthews' who came up against another physically-dominant side in the Central Coast Roosters. Despite trailing 20-0 at half time, the Rabbitohs managed to claw back in the second half 12-6 with Hooker, Trent White burrowing over close to the line. While Sheehan was forced to make several changes to the side this week he says "that's no excuse and we're still a bit off the pace." Roosters back-rower, Egan Verheyen, had a particularly strong game running lines which caused the Rabbitohs' right edge headaches all game.

NSWRL Womens Premiership Trial
v North Sydney, Ringrose Park, Sat Feb 22 1:00pm
LOSS 4-20
The Rabbitohs Womens team played their second trial today coming off a very convincing win last week. Under-strengthened, the Rabbitohs were missing Nakia Davis-Welsh and Jasmin Allende to Indigenous All Stars duties. Despite being under pressure on their try line early, the South Sydney defence managed to repel the Bears' attack within the first five minutes. After weathering the storm, a North Sydney mistake 20 metres out gifted South Sydney an opportunity to open the scoring, but the Bears' defence held strong and scores remained nil-all with 15 minutes left in the first half. A few minutes later Norths opened the scoring and converted the try, and a penalty in the set after points gave the Bears an opportunity which extended their lead to 10-0. The lead was lessened when Nellie Bell hit-back for the Rabbitohs' opening try, which left the half time score at 10-4 to the Bears. The second half started similar to the opening of the game through strong South Sydney defence, but penalties released pressure on North Sydney, allowing them to get out of their own end fairly easily. Both teams were guilty of handling errors with defence being the key stand-out throughout the middle period of the second half. With 11 minutes remaining, Norths crossed taking the score to 14-4. The Rabbitohs then put the kick-off out on the full gifting the Bears great field position. The Bears went back-to-back again, scoring in the corresponding set while converting the goal to take the final score to 20-4.
