Ethan Lowe Retires
20th October 2020
South Sydney Rabbitohs back rower, Ethan Lowe, has confirmed that 2020 will be his final season in the NRL, retiring as an NRL Premiership winner, a dual-Grand Finalist and Queensland State of Origin player this week. Lowe, 29, suffered a neck injury in the Rabbitohs’ round ten fixture. Lowe required surgery and, based on medical advice, it has been decided that it is best for him to retire from Rugby League. Lowe, a Goondiwindi Boars junior, played 143 NRL games for the North Queensland Cowboys and South Sydney Rabbitohs since making his first grade debut for the Cowboys against the Gold Coast Titans in round 12, 2013. He played a total of 108 NRL games for the Cowboys including two Grand Finals in 2015 and 2017, winning the Cowboys’ maiden premiership in 2015. Ethan, Rabbitohs first grade player number 1145, played a total of 35 NRL games for South Sydney since joining the Club in 2019, going on to represent Queensland in the 2019 State of Origin series. Lowe also won two Minor Premierships, a Queensland Cup Premiership and an NRL National State Championship with the Northern Pride under the guidance of current Rabbitohs Assistant Coach, Jason Demetriou.
"Ethan has done a fantastic job for our Club over the past two years, both on and off the field, and it’s a shame his career has come to a premature end due to injury," Rabbitohs Head of Football, Mark Ellison, said. "He is a professional in all aspects of his preparation and was one of those players that his team mates want to be around and play with every week. He’s played at the Origin level and experienced premiership success. He had success wherever he went, whether it be in the Queensland Cup with the Northern Pride, or in the NRL with the Cowboys and us at the Rabbitohs. He should be very proud of the career he has built and we’re very proud of what he achieved whilst playing for the Rabbitohs. We wish Ethan and his partner Kate the best of luck in the future and he can retire knowing that he will always be a Rabbitoh."
Lowe paid tribute to everyone that has assisted over him over many years to become an NRL and representative footballer. "I’m disappointed with how my football career has come to end in this fashion, however I’m excited about what the future could hold," Lowe said.
