The Wire from the Hill - This Week

Played on Wentworth Park, in the presence of about 1000 spectators. A most exciting and dashing game ensued. Play alternated, for in the first half South Sydney showed the better play;whilst in the second. Glebe were the masters. In the end Glebe were vanquished by 21 points to 5. Mr. T. Costello was referee.

Glebe kicked off, and rushed to South line, where, from a penalty, Conlon had a shot at goal. South rushed tho kick out, the ball was kicked over Glebe line, and Green won tho race and scored. He failed to convert. Scores, South 3, Glebe nil. Glebe invaded their opponents' 25, where play hovered till A. Butler got clear and passed the centre, where Jarman to Conlin readied the Glebe line. A free saved the defenders. Working tho scrums the better, South forwards gave Glebe no peace, Hennessy and Green, particularly the latter, being dashing. Neill, the full-back, broke away from his own line and raced past the centre trailed by A.Butler. Passing to the latter with a clear field, the line was reached, where a back tackle saved Glebe. Butler might have-passed, but preferred hanging on. Brendergost was penalised for offside, and Green kicked a splendid goal. South 5 to nil. A.Butler, from outside his ,opponcnts' 25, broke away, and shaking off tacklors, scorcd a try, which Green failed to convert. South 8, Glebe nil. Half-time.

During the first half South had the upper hand. The forwards held the scrums, and in the loose were as fast as three-quarters, Green excelling. A fast pace was maintained, mainly due to the openings made by A. Butler, who repeatedly set his back line going in attack. Glebe were not slow in defence, but one or two openings were allowed to escape. Conlon and Moir showed dash, and could havo been better supported.

South were not long in scoring when play was resumed, for Rosewell, picking up in the loose, dashed across. Green's attempt was a failure. South 11 to nil. Glebe now got in. Conlon, from the wing, rushed in and passed to Moir, to Harris, who scored. Conlon failed. South 11, Glebe 3. South immediately scored by the agency of Hennessy, H.Butler converting. Glebe again scored, Conlon kicking a goal from a penalty. South 16, Glebe 5. All this scoring took place in course of three minutes, so fast was the pace, and so quick the handling of the ball. Glebe now had the supremacy. Their short, sharp dashes gave South plenty of defence work. Edwards and Hollaway opened up the game in rare style, and excitement ran high as time drew near. Glebe strove valiantly, working as one man; solid tacking by South alone keeping the invaders in check. At length a South passing burst became dangerous, and was culminated by Hennessy forcing his way over. Green's was a fine kick. South 21, Glebe 5. Full time.

Second Grade Round 6

v Balmain, Birchgrove No.3 Oval, 3:15pm

WIN 25-3

The game opened very fast, and South Sydney immediately began attacking Balmain's line. Balmain proven themselves fit for the fight by beating them back to their own territory, where a series of scrums took place. Gradually Souths worked their way into Balmain's ground and from a passing rush House scored. Fry converted. Soon afterwards Fletcher scored, and House converted. Balmain now took a turn in matters and Walsh succeeded in crossing the line, but Newman failed to convert. South Sydney now livened up, and Fry scored and converted his own try. Then McCallum ran over after a brilliant passing rush. House converted. Play now was rather slow, the ball travelling the length field on repeated occassions. It seemed as if South's great back division was slumbering, but when Balmain pressed very hard they worke with a row. McCallum broke away, and after a good run scored. Fry converted. The scores remained the same till full-time sounded, leaving South Sydney the victors after a very fast and good game. The scores were: South Sydney 25; Balmain 3.
