The Wire from the Hill - Last Week

The Wire from the Hill - This Week

The second game on the Agricultural Ground was a much brighter one than its forerunner between Easts and Cumberland. The win by South Sydney by 30 to 11 was well deserved. Mr. C.Hutchinson was the referee.

Half a minute from the kick off, Newcastle playing with the wind, I.Carpenter marked at centre and taking the kick himself made a hard low kick which just cleared the bar. He followed his success by kicking a penalty goal. Two adverse scores in rapid succession put the metropolitan men on their mettle and the game became very fast and full of incident. Attack and counter kept the spectators in a roar. Newcastle handled the ball well, but their passing was not as clean as that of their opponents. After a vigorous rally near the Newcastle goal A.Butler kicked a penalty goal for South Sydney. The referee took a particularly keen interest in the game and practically coached the players, his voice being frequently raised. The men from Coalopolis tackled well, but made the mistake of not grassing, their opponents when they expected to find them go over, because they were pulled a bit. Men frequently resumed their run after being, merely temporarily checked. Andertson put in a great run for South Sydney, but passed badly at the end of it. Then the same player and Hennessy were associated in some good work, and Anderson scored a try, Green failed to convert. Lawson passed to Bailey, who put in a splendid dodgy run before being tackled on the line. He dropped the ball, and Cox, securing scored a try which L.Anderson converted. Half time the scores were - Newcastle 9 points South Sydney 8.

Soon after starting the second half South Sydney showed some beautiful passing, which was well judged and clean. Eight men at least handled the ball, and took it to the Newcastle line, the try falling to I.Carpenter. Hot pack work along the Newcastle goal-line found the South Sydney forwards too heavy for their opponents. Cann getting a try, which Rosewell converted. South Sydney's passing was beautiful to watch but the compensatory element in the northern men's play was their footwork in the loose. After a try for South Sydney by Conlon, Newcastle shook themselves together and gave the metropolitans an anxious time. McGuinness had gone into the three-quarter line for them, and taking a pass cleanly kicked a field goal from 20 yards in front of the South Sydney posts. Cann scored a try for South Sydney but the goal kicking was wretched. Undeterred by the score against them Newwcastle renewed the struggle with energy, their play being vastly better than when they last played in Sydney. The local men, however were not to be denied, and Cann racing for the line passed to H.Butler who scored a try. There was some lively play along the South Sydney goal-line, but relief came from the backs, and soon after Senior intercepted and ran unopposed across the Newcastle line. Green converted and the whistle sounded with South Sydney in the lead by 30 points to 11.

v Glebe, Botany, 3:15pm

WIN 2-0

Glebe kickoff with the sun in their faces, and for some time the game was of an even character. After about 20 minutes play Fry kicked a field goal for South Sydney. Trouble now commenced, and the referee ordered a Glebe player off for using offensive language. He however, refused to leave the field, and the referee at 10 minutes before half-time, the referee Mr. Poulton awarded the match to South Sydney, when they were leading 2 to nil.
