The Wire from the Hill - Last Week
The Wire from the Hill - This Week
Finals series commenced this week with the Top 8 teams progressing. Games were decided by performing a ballot. Competition points are still added to the tables, until a winner is determined.
Played on Wentworth Park, with a moderate attendance. At the end of a game which could only be called a slush dash, so sloppy was the ground, the visitors were defeated by 8 points to 3. Mr Hooper was referee.
South kicked off, and soon reached Newcastle line, where hard play ensued Newcastle forwards with Scott and Carpenter in the van, invaded South's 25 where Bailey, hand balling, spoilt a likely opening. The greasy ball militated against accurate handling, and one spot on the western wing was very muddy. and many a slide which a baseballer would have envied was executed. Dull play was relieved by a free to South at centre, and the game was carried to Newcastle 25, where Senior made q dash for the line. Newcastle sought respite in a force. In a heavy shower of rain play went on with South attacking and Newcastle tackling hard. Green and Rosewell, with Hennessy handy, made short dashes, but the defence was equal to all demands. Smith for Newcastle, broke clear, and kicked hard to Wylie (fullback) and then smothered him, a splendid opportunity being lost by Smith not allowing his man to get up A free to South followed. A forward rush by South ended with Green scoring first try. He failed to convert South, 3 to nil. Half time came with Newcastle defending.
South finished up the first half in the lead after a game was very scrambling. To handle the ball with any degree of certainity was out of the question. Still, it was football confined to the forwards, who could do nothing but kick and kick.
Ends were changed with no spell Newcastle attacked, and kept knocking at the door for some time. Smith made one line dash on the wing, which looked dangerous till Davis executed a fine tackle. Rain now came down in torrents, with play on the muddy patch, and the movements of the players caused no end of amusement to the onlookers. Amid bad handling by the Newcastle backs, Green was seen to slide across the line in possession of the ball. Again he failed to convert. From a mark at the 25 A.Butler kicked a goal. South, eight to nil. Newcastle survived a long period of defence and then gate South a taste, which was short lived for Butler, Cochrane, and Green returned to the wsitors' 25. From the kick Nicholson secured, and set off. With a clear field he dashed for the line, and just as the goal was in sight Butler, from behind, grassed him. Not to be denied, Newcastle came again, and Bailey, following a kick, fell on the ball and scored. Carpenter failed to convert. South, 8, Newcastle, 3. Desultory heavy scrummages followed to full time, with South victors.
