These clubs played on the agricultural Ground South Sydney won by 28 points to 9. Mr. C. Hutchison referee. In this match three of the "Kangaroos" were playing. Cann and A.Butler for South Sydney, and Bailey for Newcastle. Playing with the wind, South Sydney were soon on the defensive, and Bailey, Newcastle, getting hold, bustled across and scored a try, which was not converted. A vigorous assault by Newcastle was stopped by Neill, and the ball going to centre, South Sydney took a hand, and Storie scored a clever try, propping well to avoid going out of bounds. Conlin missed the goal. Determined work by Newcastle followed, and S.Carpenter shooting like a bullet through the ruck picked up the ball, which Neill had lost possession of, and scored Newcastle's second try. Coxon following fast was held back b> an opponent illegally, but managed to reach the ball across the Newcastle line and score a try for South Sydney, and evened the scoeres at 6 all. Conlin failed at conversion. Fast open and even play followed for ten minutes, both teams exhibiting resourcefulness and combination of a high order Bailey was a tower of strength for Newcastle, and was ably supported. The Newcastle forward division was a very keen one, and more than hold the South Svdney heavyweights At half time the scores were 6 all.
South Sydney put a lot more vim into their work in the second half, and Newcastle, being minus the, servītes of Smith, who had been badly bumped in the first half, had plenty of defensive work for some time. A.Butler scored a try for South Sydney, but no goal resulted by Green. Conlin made a fine run shortly after, ending it with a try for South Sydney, which Green failed to convert. Dawson was the next to score a try for South Sydney, but the kick at goal was like all that had preceded it. Conlin securing from a scrum, feinted to pass and ran to the Newcastle quarter, where he transferred to Hallett, who scored a try for South Sydney. Green converted. Lawson and Bailey were the smartest of the Newcastle three-quarters. The South Sydney three-quarter line was good, but Dawson, on the wing, was weak in his catching, although his tackling was satisfactory. H.Butler scored a try for South Sydney, who thus led by 23 points to 6. Newcastle's last scoring effort by Bailey was a brilliant one. Butler ran well and passed to Cann, who scored a try, which Green converted. Final scores, South Sydney 28 points, Newcastle 6.
