WIN 16-2
Late Changes
Hennessy was out with Davis moving into the forwards and Anderson on the wing
South Sydney met Newtown on the Agricultural Ground in the presence of a few people. South Sydney won by 16 points to 2 points. South Sydney had the wind in the first half and despite the greasy ball passed well, and were not long in registering 10 points from two tries and two goals. From a scrum in the 25 Butler passed out neatly to Ross who scored a good try in the corner. From the scrum Butler again sent it to Ross who scored between the posts and H.Butler converted. They were the cleverer in tin scrums, and their halves secured the ball oftener than the other side, and speedily set their backs in motion. The Newtown full-back was very reliable. Most of the half Newtown were on the defensive, and did horne good tackling. Clever passing enabled South Sydney to score a third try by Conlin which was converted by Butler. The half was all in favour of South Sydney whose score at the end of it was 13 points to nil.
Newtown infused more dash into their play in the early part of the second half, when the rain pelted down harder, but the passing was faulty, and when a score looked imminent something went wrong. At length from a mark by Jones. Newtown scored a goal, Cheadle kicking it from near halfway. A vigorous assault bv South Sydney was ended by a free to the defenders which extricated them from a difficult position. Newtown continued to press, and lively play was witnessed amangst the forwards and halves. Shortly afterwards the back division on both sides was fully extended and, there was some brilliant running, dodging, and passing, and equally meritorious tackling. Leveson (for South Sydney) waa particularly good and scored a capital try which was not converted. Meredith distinguished himself for Newtown beating the opposing fullback, and racing to the line, where he was brought down from behind by Conlin. The impetus of the charge took him our the line, bnt he dropped the ball and missed scoring by as narrow a margin as was ever witnessed. It was a faster half than the first, and the teams appeared more equally matched, and made affairs very willing. The game ended in a win for South Sydney by 16 points to 2 points. Mr Welch was the referee.
