Metropolian Rugby Union General Ban on Professionals
17th August 1910
Herb Gilbert's Metropolitan RU cap
The Metropolitian Rugby Union at a large special meeting today, adopted the report of the special committee on the ameteur question and fixed the date of its coming into operation, and fixed the date of 1st January 1911. It means that anyone who competes as a professional in any branch of sport, after this date will not be eligable to play Rugby Union football in Sydney. This drastic move to restrict the game to men who set store on the principles of amateurism was established to bring the MRU laws into line with the ideas of the bulk of the players and the general football public.
