Selected Round 2 Teams

At Wentworth Park 10,000 people watched South Sydney emerge victorious over Glebe in a fast and strenuous game, in which the Reds shook up the nimble innn from Surry Hills. Glebe kicked off with a light breeze blowing across the ground, and the sun shining in their eyes. A brief exchange of kicks and Brown kicked out at the Glebe 25. The Reds worked back to centre, where Hallett kicked high to Algie, who mulled it, and the three quarter, hustling him, set, sail goalwards, but the last man was grassed on the line. Glebe were penalised, and Hallett's kick struck the posts and bounced in-field, a narrow escape for the Reds. McKivat and White worked out again, and from a scrum near half-way the former set Cubitt going. The five-eighth made a lot of ground, and passed to Gleeson who was forced into touch. South Sydney cleared temporarily, but Cubitt came through the ruck and got to the opposing 25. Then a S.S. three-quarter had his side penalised for interfering with Algie, and A.Burge kicked a good goal. Glebe, 2 to nil. Play veered across to the S.S. left wing, where H.Butler picked up in the ruck and transferred to Hilliard, who cut in but was grassed. Hallett then sped across goal, and the ball going to Stuntz, the sprinter got to the comer, but was forced out. The Red forwards dribbled up the field, only to find the visitors back a moment later. But Cubitt and White raced it out again. The South Sydney forwards were displaying great dash in the open, and with Hilliard and Butler to the fore, they maintained the attack. Hilliard kicked to White, who fumbled, and the meteoric McCabe, dashing in, was off like a shot. Tha defence closed in on him, but he scored 15 yards from the posts. Conlin failed to convert. South Sydney, 3 to 2. McKivat set the Reds going, but P.Burge knocked on. Leveson, McCabe and Hallett rushed up the field, but White stopped them. Then Conlin passed to Stuntz, but Gleeson forced him into touch near the corner flag. It was kicked across goal, and McCabe anticipating the bounce of the ball, set off, accompanied by Gilbert. Blocked five yards out, he sent it on to the three quarter, who dived and scored with a couple of Reds hanging, on, but failed to kick the goal. South Sydney, 6 to 2. Glebe put more, ginger into their play, and led by P.Burge and White, the forwards set South Sydney a merry tune in defence. They could not put. the finishing touches to many good rushes, and at half-time South Sydney led by 6 to 2.

Hallett opened the second half, and Glebe speedily added to their score. 0. Brown failed to gather in a high punt, and A.Burge hustling him, sprinted from the 25 and scored a good try. His kick at goal failed. South Sydney, 6 to 5. The reverse put the Southerners on their mettle, and the pace was a cracker for a few minutes. But a penalty against them spelled the Glebe. Garlick and Brighton threatened to score, but Stuntz came across very fast and picked up off the forward's toes, and kicked out. Hallett's line kicking put South Sydney on the move again, and a passing bout by Leveson to McCabe, to Gilbert, ended by Algie grassing Gilbert, near the line. The game was now very fast, and Glebe's tackling particularly deadly. South Sydney could not get their backs moving for some time, but from a scrum on the left wing Leveson sent on to McCabe, to Hallett, who missed; Conlin backing up, whipped it to Stuntz, but he was grassed at the corner flag. A minute later P.Burge was penalised for off-side, and Conlin kicked a goal from 35 yards out. South Sydney, 8 to 5. Glebe rallied splendidly, and repeatedly stormed the goal-line, but the visitors tackling was sure. White, Griffiths and Brighton were working like tigers, but could not pierce the defence. Hilliard changed the play to the Glebe 25. From the scrum Leveson sent it on to Hilliard, to Adams, to Hallett, to Gilbert; Hallet rushing round accepted tho re-pass and scored in the corner, a beautiful piece of football. Gilbert failed at goal. South Sydney, 11 to 5. Again, the Reds charged goalwards, and were only held on the line. Gleeson made a desperate dash to score, but fell short by a foot. S.S. were penalised in front of goal for off-side, and Algie landed the goal. South Sydney, 11 to 7. L.Kearney, referee.
