LOSS 7-8

Selected Tour Team

Punctual to time, South Sydney filed out on to the field of play, and were shortly after followed by the northern team. A few minutes from kick-off, South's started a passing rush from centre, to within ten yards of the line, all of the backs handling admirably. From scrum, Nathan secured, passed to Thompson, on to Brebner, and things were looking bad for northern, but a passing rush was neutralised by the last-named hanging on. Lawson secured from a scrum, near half way, and gained over 20 yards. Then players on both sides - exchanged kicks, from one of which Thompson made a good run, followed a few minutes later by Nathan, who gained about 20 yards for Souths. Then a burly South forward broke away, and made a determined dash, which was ended by Jones grassing him with a lovely tackle. Shortly after L.Brown, in centre, marked in good position. Dymant took the kick, and the ball sailed between the posts. South Sydney 2, Newcastle, nil. Full-back Brown, from his own 25, took the ball to within ten yards of Northern line, but the effect was neutralised by forward play. A little later Jones cleared well by a splendid kick to half-way. From a scrum Newcastle secured, the backs all handling well. Coleman was the last to handle, being forced out of touch. Again there was great excitement as Brunt secured, made a dash, transferred to full-back Davies, who did a streak along the line, but was forced out just a few yards from the coveted line. After a succession of scrums Souths heeled well, but the advantage of gaining the ball was counteracted by using the blind side too much. From a scrum at half-way Northern forwards shone out well, Perkins, Anderton, and Barcley being prominent in a rush. Later Jones and Coleman were associated in a passing rush, the latter running strong when forced out of play. Lawson, in a mix up of forwards, took a splendid mark in a good position, but Llghtfoot failed to raise a score. In play again, Thompson came on well, after Davies had tried to take the ball on the bounce, and a try resulted. Dymant again added the extras. South Sydney 7, Northern nil.

In the second half H.Pearce took Hillard's place, who had wrenched his ankle. From scrum at half-way Nathan did a good run, being ably assisted by Meeghan. Then Symons, for Newcastle, came away with the ball, and kicking, followed on, taking Brown in possession. Then from scrum at half-way, Dobson secured, passed to A.Coleman, who, beating a few opponents, had only the full-back to pass to reach the line. He short-kicked, and a race for the ball resulted in Coleman securing the verdict. Scully's attempt at goal failed. South Sydney 7, Newcastle 3. Shortly after Scully shone out for Newcastle with a dogged run, bringing play in South's 25. Newcastle came away again, Perkins securing, passed to Jones, who missed a bad pass, but A.Coleman whipped in, and getting posession, bumped his way across the line, for the second time. He was loudly applauded for this play. Jones failed, to raise the score. South Sydney 7, Newcastle 6. Again into play, both sides doing valiant work. Jones and another back did well, and things looked bad for Souths, but Brown cleared for his side splendidly. Anderson shone out well, taking the ball from a pass out to Perkins, and kicked to Souths, who returned, and Scully marked in good position. E.Coleman took the kick, and piloted the ball safely. Newcastle 8, South Sydney 7. Again Anderson and E.Coleman, among the forwards, did well bringing the ball from half-way to near the line, and then the Northern defence would be tested, but not broken through. Just, before knock-off time Fletcher for Souths secured the ball in good position, and dropped for goal. Opinions were divided whether it was a goal or not, but referee Price decreed no goal, and this was the opinion, of most. present. It was getting so dark now that the players could not be picked out, although the supporters present tried to assist the players in their play by lighting matches. It was a strange sight, one that perhaps has never been seen at a football match before. Nicholls, Meeghan and Groves came nicely away, but no try resulted. Then A.Coleman took a hand in good aggressive play, but at last the whistle, blew. Leaving final scores Newcastle 8, South Sydney 7. Brown for Souths was a marvel, and proved his ability as a splendid full-back. Nathan was one of the best players on the ground. He was here, there, and everywhere. Thompson, Fletcher, Nicholls and Meeghan deserve special mention, but one and all played well. For, Newcastle A.Coleman was a host in himself. His runs were especially fine. He was ably, supported by all his backs, and it would be wrong to make special note of any of them. They did more than they were asked. The forwards, one and all, worked well. Anderson and Lighfoot shining out. Also E.Coleman and Perkins in the loose.
