DRAW 3-3

Selected Round 8 Teams

About 18,000 people attended the Agricultural Ground, where the 130yds sprint was, run in addition to the football match. A really splendid game, fast, and strenuous from the start, which many exciting incidents and plenty of hard tackling, ended in another draw, which is the third in succession by these teams. The gate produced about £900. Hallett kicked off, but it was recalled and scrummed at half-way. South Sydney worked forward and about 40 yards out Hallett dropped at goal, but it fell short. Keeping Newtown on their 25 line, the Red and Green were in the ascendant for some minutes, but McCabe, Noble, and Grundie dribbled through, and a long kick to Brown found him fumbling. Collier snapped up and kicked back to half-way. Butler, McCabe, and Cann carried it on, but in the Newtown 25 a free-kick saved the Blues. McCabe started another rush from half-way, on the left wing, running along toucli to the 25, where, being stopped, he slung the ball midfield. Butler picked up and ran across to Darmody, who sent on to Gilbert. He cut past R.Farnsworth, and cut in, then sent it to Stuntz, who dashed ahead, and his throw-back struck a Newtown player, the ball rolling into touch close to the corner flag. A free for off-side in the scrummage helped Newtown out. Hayes started his side on the attack by beating Butler, and then starting V.Farsnworth, who beat Gilbert, and as Brown came at him passed to Catt, but it went to earth, and the three-quarter toed to the line, where Hallett dived for it. A great struggle ensued, and Newtown were allowed back to the 25 line, where Gilbert had S.S. penalised for off-side. Russell's kick was wide of the post a couple of feet. Newtown kept up the pressure, and had the Red and Green busy defending. Hayes, on the right wing, ran round the blind side of the scrum and Roy Farnsworth kicked up to Brown. R. and V.Farnsworth followed up fast, but Brown got his kick in. It went to W. Farnsworth, who set off, and with Glover, J.McCue and Murray soon had S.S. striving desperately to keep their line clear. Newtown were attacking with vim and taking scrums where possible. An attempt by the Premiers' backs to got moving was spoiled by Nicholls intercepting, and with McCabe transferring to centre. Stuntz came with a great dash, but Catt and V.Farnsworth pulled him down in the 25. Play veered to the opposite wing, and as Butler headed a rush for S.S., Cann made more ground, and sent to Gilbert who saw an opening, and went hard, but the whistle stopped him. The Blue forwards worked out, and a badly judged kick by Hallett enabled Neill to force. The game continued fast, and the tackling the best seen for some time past, the form shown being a big improvement on recent games. South Sydney varied their attack by Stuntz swinging in from the touch-line and accepting Butler's pass from the scrum. Twice they tried the move, and from the last attempt the sprinter, after beating the Blue five-eighth, started Gillett, who overran the pass. Stuntz fielded it again and sent out to Collier, who was smothered. W.Farnsworth intercepted a pass infield from Stuntz and ran Newtown out of danger. A good line kick helped them on, and a penalty kick on the wing outside the 25 was taken by Russell, but fell short. Half-time. A scoreless half, that was very fast for the first twenty minutes, but eased off a little towards he close, yet very keenly contested.

Glover opened the second spell, and V.Farnsworth forced down from a long kick by Hallett. Cann started a movement across field by slinging it out from the ruck on the right wing to a forward, who sent it on to Hallett, to Butler, who was going fast when pushed out in the corner. Hard ruck play carried the ball to the goal posts, where Hayes came through and ran to half-way before being pulled down. Russell beat Collier and kicked in-field, but Darmody held on to him, and again Russell's kick missed by inches. The forwards wore delvinsr in hard or} the Blue's left wing near the half-way mark when Roy Farnsworth dashed up and booted hard to Brown, in the corner. The bounce had the full-back waiting for it to go over the line for him to force. He did not notice P.McCue coming along fast. The forward fielded the ball from Brown and went over in the corner, scoring the opening try after ten minutes of the second spell had gone. A very difficult goal was missed by Russell. Newtown, 3 to nil. The score put new zest into both sides, and faster went the game. Darmody, Hallett, and Gilbert were racing away, with Stuntz handy. The three-quarter was stopped by Catt, and Hayes ran his side out. Near half-way Gilbert secured and kicked to Collier, who ran on as the crowd rose and cheered play lustily. Russell blocked his way, so he threw it infield, where Glover downed on ' it. Gilbert had him before he moved far. The crowd appreciated the fast game, with the ball being slung about in bewildering fashion. Fast as the wind it went, first a Stripe, then a Blue, each bowling the other over in the tackle and returning to the fray. However, a great rally ended in Newtown territory, and the ambulance attended to Stuntz's hand. Off again, V.Farnsworth dashed up the centre, and the crowd rose and cheered play lustily. Russell blocked his kick, and it rolled over the line, Brown forcing as McCue dived for it. A close call for South Sydney. Newtown were displaying great dash now, and making inroads in the defence. The Blue five-eighth and McCue looked dangerous in repeated rushes, but failed to clinch the moves. S.S. worked back to half-way. Coming again from Stuntz, it went to Collier, to Gilbert to Hallett, who missed a high pass in a highly promissing position on the left-wing. Collier tried to force his way through, but failed, and passed in-field. Worked across to the opposite wing, Stuntz finished with an other attack near the flag. South Sydney kept pegging away and were ultimately rewarded. Cann had the option of a free or a scrum under the posts, and he took the latter, and it was well he did. A few moments later his forwards got it out past the half at the 25, and Cann pounced on it and cut in then sent it to McCabe, who ferreted his way past a Blue, and sent to Hallett, to Collier, who dived and scored just inside the corner flag - a great try in a very quickly executed movement. Darmody missed the goal - 3 points all. Thence on to the end Newtown played the stronger frame and went perilously near to scoring on three occasions but South Sydney's luck stood to them, and the whistle sounded on a drawn game.
