South Sydney v Goldfields League

West Wyalong, Recreation Football Ground

Sat Jul 15, 3:15 pm

LOSS 8-23

On Thursday Jul 13 South Sydney were given permission by the League to send a team to visit West Wyalong in the Goldfields League. Arthur Hennessy had earlier traveled to coach the local team on the Northern Union game.

At the invitation of the Wyalong footballes, South Sydney Football Club sent a team to West Wyalong, under the management of Mr G.S.Ball. The local lads had been strenuously training for some time past, but notwithstanding this fact the rsult of the match proved a surprise to local football enthusiasts. The scores 23-8 suggest that local football 'material' is no mean order o that the team pitted against it was very mediocre. True it is, the combination displayed by the local boys was of a high order, and particularly so when a comparison is made with that exhibited by the visitors. The Recreation Football Ground was the field of battle. The ground was in fair order after the late rains and could be described as faster to run on and softer to fall on. A temporary wire enclosure had been erected around the ground for the occasion, but this failed in its objective, as the crow on many occasions and especially when worked up in its usual fits of exitment, trespassed on the ground. The day was perfect.

South Sydney kicked off, and Goldfieldsstarted with a fine exhibition of passing, which took the ball into the visitors' ground. Goldfields secured a penalty, and Findley potted a splendid goal. South Sydney endeavoured to turn the tables at this stage, but their passing was defective. Goldfields played up well, intercepting passes, and eventually Jack Mulhall got away with the ball and crossed the line. Leggo converted. On the resumption of play South Sydney's scrum-half Nathan secured the ball several times from the scrum, but his backs faild to do anything of a material nature with the leather. Gardiner who was playing a sterling game managed to cross the line at this point. South Sydney were exhibiting more dash, Darmody and Conlin getting away with the ball several times. Eventually Souths crossed the Goldfield's line for the first time. Although, the angle was a difficult to negotiate, Conlin essayed the task and succeeded in kicking the best goal of the day. From a smart pass to Clarke from Gardiner, the former recorded another try for the Goldfields. Leggo who was in good kicking form, again succeeded in converting. The scores 13 to 5 in favour of the Goldfields. The scores were unaltered at half-time.

The dash, characteristic of the play of both teams, somewhat abated in the second half. Goldfields showed out conspicously on several occassions by its fast passing rushes and dribbling. The scrum-half got the ball away nicely and evidently understood his work in this regard. South's managed to place another try to their credit, but failed at goal. Jack Mulhall, who played a most consistent and solid game all through, again crossed the line. This made the scores 16-8 in favour of the Goldfields. Before the whistle blew for full time, Goggin dashed over the visitors line and Leggo converted. Findley proved himself to be a sterling little full-back, getting his team out of difficulties many times by his cool level-headed play. The scores at the conclusion stood, Goldfield 23 South Sydney 8. No doubt the 16 hours journey from Sydney militated to a certain extent against the play of the visitors, as a number of local enthusiasts were disappointed at the exhibition given by them. However, credit cannot be withheld from the Goldfields players for defeating a team that comes from Sydney's crack club. From the start the game did not appear in doubt a far as the local boys were concerned. The game on the whole was free from unneccessary roughness.
