WIN 8-0
About 3000 people witnessed South Sydney down Annandale by 8 to nil, after a fast and hard, even game, in which the victors were scarcely any better than the vanquished. Annandale won the toss, and played with the wind. Hallett set the leather in motion, and it was at once apparent the visitors were in great heart. While inside, the 25 Annandale were penalised, the ball came to Roy Norman, who gained lots of ground and put his side on the attack, but Gilbert relieved well. From a scrum at centre Ray Norman got hold, and sprinted for the line. When opposed by Gilbert he punted, and Greshier, being handy, caused South Sydney to force. No sooner in play than the visitors were again dangerous, South's defence being severely taxed. Another force followed. This turn in events made the game look well for Annandale, who really deserved a better gate for their efforts. Now came a fine piece of individual play, Ray Norman snapping up at centra streaked along the right wing, avoiding and fending off several opponents, till he reached Brown, the full-back. Here Butler forced the ball out. Back came South through the agency of Hallett, Butler, and McCabe, to Annandale's 25, only to meet solid defence. A succession of scrums followed, till South Sydney's defence was again tried, without result, Annandale's luck being against them. Midfield play resulted in South being penalised, Hedley taking the kick made a fine effort, the ball striking the bar and rebounding into the field. Annandale, following up fast, took Souths unawares, yet the latter cleared with a brilliant combined movement right to Annandale line. A scoreless spell. Annandale ought really to have put on two or three tries.
With the wind, South Sydney made the pace on resuming, Cann dropped back as wing three-quarter, and left the pack to consist of five. Annandale soon followed suit, Stuart playing as a winger or five-eiglith. South Sydney now worried Annandale. At centre, from a scrum, Butler sent it on to McCabe, to Gilbert, but he was' downed by Hedley. South, intent on scoring, stormed again, and were soon knocking at the door. However. Annadale's defence was brilliant, and every effort was repulsed. Relieved to centre, Butler again started a chain of passes, which made little headway, the tackling being too deadly. In this bout Roy Norman got hold of the ball, and, running from his own 25 to South territory, sent it on to Lillyman, who punted to avoid a tackier. The kick being too hard, the leather rolled out close to the corner flag. From the scrum South came away in a fine combined movement, but a forward pass spoiled it. The visitors were now hard pressed, but the Norman brothers, who were working very keenly, relieved to centre. Hard forward play, with plenty of solid tackling, was the order. Then a penalty to Annandale was followed by two marks by South, which gained lots of ground. Again Butler set his backs in motion, Fry, Collier, Gilbert, and McCabe exchanging passes, which ended in nothing, owing to the splendid defence. Keeping it up, South Sydney were at last rewarded. Butler secured from a scrum in front of goal, and sent out to McCabe who took it at his top pace, and running straight, dodged one of the three-quarters and Hedley, and scored at the posts. Hallett failed from the easiest of positions, taking a running lack, instead of lobbing the ball over the bar. South Sydney, 3 to nil. Anandale made determined attacks at once, almost ending in success, Ray Norman and Stuart shining. But Butler marked close to his own goal, and saved. Several pretty movements by South followed, Cann being prominent. Then a fine piece of concerted play aroused the spectators. Gilbert took a pass, and fending of several opponents, he swung down the right wing well supported. He sent it to Hallett, to Collier, who was forced out close to the line. From this out South Sydney had the best of matters. From a passing bout Collier was the last to receive, being forced out at Annandale's corner flag. The ball was on the right wing, not far from centre. It was kicked in, and Fry, getting it, shot off to the open, supported by Hallett and Cann. The passes ended in the last named, who was limping badly, getting the pass free from Lillyman, who was drawn by Hallebt. Near the comer Cann jumped over Hedley's low tackle, and crossed there, but ran round. Darmody added the goal as the whistle sounded. South Sydney, 8 to nil. Mr. Ballerum, referee.
