Marrickville Consider First Grade
2nd August 1911
Marrickville Club has made a application to the executive committee of the Newtown District Club for permission to play in the first grade competition next season. The district committee, fearing that Newtown could not stand the strain caused by the loss of the players, declined to entertain the request. Marrickville are now considering if they will directly apply with the League.
Sydney Consider First Grade
30th August 1911
A movement is a foot to form a new district team to take part in the metropolitian competition with boundaries practically similar to those of the old Sydney Union club. A meeting will be held this evening in the Albert Hotel, Stanley and Young streets to discuss the proposed Sydney League First Grade team next season. Representatives of the various clubs in the district and any First Grade players who wish to assist the movement are invited to attend. If formed it will have a weakening effect on South Sydney, and the formation of the proposed Marrickville club might also lead to Newtown asking that Darlington be added to them, and thus the red and green would be again affected. However Souths suffered from an embarrassment of riches this season, and have generously loaned able players to other clubs. These they can now recall.
Sydney Advance a step closer
27th December 1911
Tho Sydney Club has advanced a step further in their movement to have a first grade club in its district next season. A deputation waited upon the League committee, who will later on decide if the proposal is a wise one. It is claimed by many favouring the scheme that Eastern Suburbs, which would be principally affected by the admission of the Sydney Club, is well provided with recruits, and would experience no difficulty in keeping up its presont standard. A drawback to the organisation which includes in their territory the city proper has been that many of the best players lived in residential chambers, and though the displays of the clubs have been good, there has been no strong following such as exists in the case where the players have their homes, in the strictest meaning of the word, in the district The proposed Sydney Club will not suffer from this handicap, as the majority of the players will be drawn from the thickly-populated parts.
Marrickville is another team that has first grade ambitions. There is plenty of enthusiasm in the district, which contains a fine oval. The sole question for the controlling body to decide is whether Newtown can survive the loss of the brothors Farns- worth and M'Cue, W.Noble, D.Grandie, and, others. The admission of both Marrickville and Sydney would obviate any need for a bye each Saturday. Howevor, the League will carefully weigh the claims of both applicants.
