WIN 13-6

Selected Round 12 Teams

At the North Sydney Oval, about 2000 people witnessed the local men suffer defeat in an interesting and pleasant game. South Sydney led by 8 to 3 at the interval, and each side added one try before concluding. Boland kicked off for North Sydney against a light breeze, and South Sydney penned them in their own territory for some time. Robson was injured and went off, S.Lloyd coming on in his stead. A.Butler kept the backs moving by whipping smartly from the scrum, and McCabe and Fry carried on the attack to the right wing, where Collier, when on the touch-line, short-punted over the goal-line, but the local men won in the rush and touched down. Hucker started North Sydney attacking by cleverly beating Nicholls and C.Butler, and then veering to the right wing, he sent it on to O.Deane to Anderson, who kicked out to the corner flag. South Sydney cleared their line. And then Hilliard started them on the move goalwards, and in the 25 bustled Morton, but the full-back kicked into touch. North Sydney worked out again, but from a scrum at centre A.Butler started McCabe, and he cut in and sent it out to Fry, who was pulled down, Nicholls secured, however, and with A.Butler in attendance, he ran on, then transferred, and the half ran in and scored. Leary kicked the goal. S.S. 5 to nil. The Red and Green were nearly in again a few minutes later, after a neat passing rush between McCabe, Fry and Coxon, but Collier knocked on, and Davis ran North Sydney out of danger. Settling down to hard ruck play, the Red and Black forged ahead, and when in front of goal in the 25 Davis picked up and dodged between Brown and a forward, and then had only a yard to go to score. He fell over, scoring as a tackier came at him. From Morton's kick the ball hit the near post and rebounded in field. S.S., 5 to 3. Play hovered in neutral territory for a while. Then the visitors asserted themselves again. McCabe shot through a ruck on the right wing, and when blocked by Hucker passed out to Nicholls, to Hilliard, who knocked on. A scramble ensued in the corner, and Davis got to it arnd forced. South Sydney, still aggressive, worked across field. A penalty against the local men was taken by Leary, but it went wide. The game was rushed to the left wing, where a good line kick by A.Butler put S.S. in a strong position in the corner. The local team forced them back a few yeards, but Leary started them on again. He ran McCabe into his stride, and the five-eighh finished with a try in the corner. Dymant failed from a difficult angle. S.S., 8 to 3. South Sydney were playing the stronger game now, and the Red and Black, were busy defending until the half-time whistle sounded.

South Sydney opened the second half, and scored a few minutes after the kick-off. Hennessy and T.Butler started the side, going, and the rush carried play to near the line, on the left wing. Here, from a scrum, A.Butler threw a long pass out to McCabe, and he cut in and sent it on to Fry, to Dymant, on the wing. The latter went hard for the line, but was blocked, and Fry, who had raced to the outside, accepted the ball, again and ran in. It was a very neat bit of combination, which Dymant capped with a good goal. S.S., 13 to 3. Nicholls and Hilliard were prominent in another spirited, dash by the Red and Green, but Morton pulled the latter down. Davis stayed the visitors again by marking and booting up the centre. North Sydney' were lively for a time in attack on the right wing, and Mitchell was going strongly when Brown, with a good tackle, grassed him, and then North changed the attack to the opposing wing. Hucker raised the hopes of the side by side-stepping two tackiers and dashing along the touch-line, getting to near the flag before being stopped; The local men maintained the attack with considerable vigor, and threatened the line repeatedly in ths corner. McFarlane and Davis were pulled down inches short of the line, but the defence was too good, and kept them at bay. However, North Sydney were playing the stronger game, and had the viators rattled on more than one occasion until McCabe started the side out, and with Dymant and Leary changed the attack to N.S. 25. Finding the defence too solid on the left wiiig, McCabe cross-kicked to Collier, but O.Deane bustled the latter, and the game was transferred, to centre. McCabe, darting into the ruck, started the visitors back again, and quick passing between Hilliard, Hennessy, and Coxon had North defending again. Lloyd rushed out with it, and a brilliant burst of passing by the local backs added to their score. McFarlane started Davis, and their Deane and Anderson carried the rush on, veering to the left wing. Blocked here, McFarlane started them back again, and Bollard and Davis exchanged passes across the goal. The latter gave it to Mitchell, on the wing, as he was tackled, and the three-quarter ran in very fast. Davis failed to convert. S.S, 13 to 6. The sides attacked in turn, Hucker putting in some good runs up the centre for North Sydney, but towards the close S.S. came again with Fry, Dymant, and Collier passing quickly. Collier knocked on and stayed the rush, but the backs, moved on once; more, only to be again frustrated, as Leary, failed to rake in his pass on the wing. Mr. A. Ballerum referee.

The Butler family was represented by Artie, Harry and Tom in the South Sydney North Sydney match this week. The new recruit made a promising first appearance, and if he continues to display the same form should easily find a place with the South Sydney vanguard.

Second Grade - Top 8 Qualifying Round

v Norths, North Sydney Oval, 2:00pm

LOSS 3-13

Played at North Sydney Oval, and won by North Sydney by 13 points to 3. The Norths, with a favourable wind, had the advantage in the first half, and Souths were from first to last on the defensive. Half-time North Sydney 5, South Sydney nil. The scorer was G.MacFarlane a try, which F.MacFarlane converted. In the second half, notwithstanding the Souths advantage of the wind, they failed to appreciate it, and in the first 20 minutes play Norths added another 5 points the try being secured by Green. F.MacFarlane adding the extras. Meeghan for Souths however, came to the rescue shortly before full-time and scored. The kick failed. Norths followed up, and F.MacFarlane scored. His kick failed.

Grosvenor and North Sydney obtained a similar number of competition points. But as there is a greater discrepancy in the points scored for and against Grosvenor secures a position in the semi-finals in preference to North Sydney. However North Sydney protested and this was upheld by the League. A playoff will now be played next week.
