Selected Playoff Teams

The South Sydney team included R.Thompson and W.Rix who had figured in the early match for Redfern second grade. About 14,000 people watched this match at the Sports Ground. The game, very even in teerritorial sense, was won by the versatile Messenger who was the outstanding player on the field. While kicking exceptionally well, even for Messenger, he also displayed remarkable form generally. Messenger kicked off from the Cricket Ground end, and South Sydney returned to centre. There was no wind, and at the start the sun was not obstructive. A forward rush, headed by Nicholls and Coxon, carried the game quickly to the corner, where Collier fell on the ball just short of the line. Eastern Suburbs, worked out by short kicks, and across to the opposite wing, where Brown let it roll out. In a few minutes play worked back again, and Brown put South Sydney again in the corner with a good kick. Eastern Suburbs worked back a few yards and a free-kick taken by Messenger helped them further. On their opponents side of half-way Pearce, Campbell, and White infused some life into the game with a spirited rush, but were stopped with good tackling, by Collier and Brown. White put in another rush along the touch-line, and Collier, was injured, in the tackle. A free to Eastern Suburbs on the left wing was taken by Messenger, and from a few yards inside half-way the ball dropped undur the bar. O.Brown, on fielding it, knocked on, and a scrum was ordered in front of the posts, where McCabe came round too quickly, in the opinion of the referee, and Messenger landed an easy goal. Eastern Suburbs, 2 to nil. It really did look as though the ball had come out to Cody, and that McCabe's rush was justified. However, the referee was on the spot. South Sydney rushed the attack now, and Coxon and Nicholis, with H.Butier, carried it down the centre, but Butler's pass was forward, and Eastern Suburbs cleared again. They were soon going goalwards, as Collins, Messenger, and White dashed for the left wing. Collier took the sprinter, who passed in to Campbell, who was smothered. South Sydney were penalised, and Messenger's kick, from near half-way on the right wing, struck the far post, but fell in-field. It was a remarkable effort. Eastern Suburbs were attacking with some dash but South Sydney transferred to neutral territory again and there McCabe and H.Thompson exchanged passes along the left wing. The latter centred when in the 25 but the move got no further. South Sydney were playing splendidly considering how they had had to patch up the team. They came again, O.Brown centreing to the goal from, the wing at half-way. It was a long kick, beyond the Eastern Suburbs full-back. He and Coxon raced for it, but the referee allowed the drop-out. Coxon was off-side, but seemed to beat Kinghorn in the race for the ball. Messenger added to the score with another penalty goal given against a Southern forward for off-side. Eastern Suburbs 4 to nil. The gme continued fast but somewhat loose in the centre. As the Eastern Suburbs five-eighth (Collins) was coming through McCabe dashed in and bustled him for the ball, and with two kicks had the side racing for the line. Kingborn turned and chased it, forcing down as McCabe crossed the line with him. H.Thompson was injured in a clash, and left the field. Dymant came on in his, place. Collier raised a cheer as he side stepped Messenger, and turning, hare-like, beat the E.S. captain at his own game. He dodged his way ahead, but the Stripes arrived like bees and swarmed him. Messenger was making his presence felt as he tried at goal from a mark by Collins, and twice dropped at goal unsuccessfully. Then Rix came away from a scrum at the goal-posts, and kicked up the centre to Kinghorn, who marked it, and Messenger landed a very fine goal from 6ft inside half-way line. E.S. 6 to nil The repeated kicking and marking had taken some of the life out of the game, and as a spectacle it was rather disjointed up till, the half-time whistle, passing being very rarely seen. It was exciting enough but not at all attractive to a man who likes to see a sharp movements by the backs.

R.Thompson kicked off in the second half, and B.Dalton 1st the ball out at the 25 flag. Frawley, O'Malley, and Lees headed a rush that carried them past centre. Near the 25 Spence got off-side from a scrummage, , and Messenger added a Jurcher two points within a few minutes of resuming. E.S., 8 to nil. This South Sydney, imitated immediately. Collier picked up after Fry had been tackled, and after cutting in to the centre he passed to McCabe, who circled round and round withoat finding an opening, he was then pulled down. A free-kick was given against E.S., and Dymant, opened South Sydney's' score with a good goal. E.S. 8 to 2. A small, section of the crowd was calling at Messenger for marking at every oportunity. But they were blind partisans. Next, the referee penalised Messenger for unduly wasting time in taking a kick. But Messenger soon had the laugh on the noisy ones. Securing the ball well inside half-way in the centre, he veered to the left fast, supported by Campbell and White. As Thompson came at him he passed the ball past Campbell out to, White, who took it well and raced down to the, 25 flag along the touch-line. When Collier came at him. ,he re-passed to Messenger, who cut in straight for the goal-posts and scored. It was an extremely pretty movement. Messenger also landed the goal. E.S., 13 to 2. Thus Messenger had scored all the points. That unfailing boot of the. Eastern Suburbs skipper again added to the Souths discomfiture, as White again marked on the left wing, and from a yard inside half-way, almost, on the touch-line, Messenger landed another beautiful goal. E.S, 15 to 2. South Sydney struggled as gamely as footballers can be. H.Butler came with a dash on the left wing, but White relieved. South Sydney came across the field, passing along the three-quarter line, until it reached Collier, who slipped down. Spence shot it out to Thompson, near centre, and he went on a few yards and sent it back to Spence, thence on to Collier, who was forced into, touch. Keeping at it in the corner, the ruck carried it to the line, where Hilliard fell, over, scoring South Sydney's first try; but Dymant failed to convert. Eastern Suburbs 15 to 5. A further spasmodic burst by the Red and Green, headed by Hilliard, carried them near the line again. But Cody, coming round the pack, fielded the ball and returned to Brown, who kicked to Messenger. He came across fast to the left wing, beating the full-back enroute. Cutting in at half-way, he footed Collier and sent it out past Campbell to White, who took it well and raced fast along the touch-line, and then crossing about 10 yards from the corner, improved his position and touched down behind thc posts. White was too fast for the South Sydney men. Messenger missed the simplest of goals by kicking with too little force. Eastern Suburbs 18 to 5. Another pretty piece of play soon followed. Campbell shot away from a host of players at centre, and when tackled sent out to Lees, who ran on and turned and shot a quick, high pass to Messenger, who had to beat Dymant. He then dashed to the wing and sent to White who cut infield, but was taken by Collier, but re-passed to Messenger, who shot past Brown and ran over near the posts. It was choice combination. Messenger added another goal. E.S. 23 to 5. South Sydney got busy again, and rushed forward, with the, ball on the ground. Some fumbling in the 25 stayed them. From a high punt Messenger took and claimed a mark at his 25, but the referee did not respond. Messenger was then downed, and in the centre of the melee he had his head injured. While Messenger, lay there the play went on, and the ball was rushed goalvards by South Sydney. Rix swung it out to McCabe, but it went to the earth, and he picked up and, though bustled along touch, crossed at the flag with a try. Dymant goaled. E.S. 23 to 10. During the closing few minutes of the game the players became very heated as a resuit of the injury to Messenger. The referee had to administer cautions to players on each side, the forwards using their fists. Time closed on an incident, that looked ugiy. The game, save for the last few minutes, was splendidly contested, and it was grandly controlled by Mr T.McMahon, the referee.
