South Sydney v Newtown

WIN 12-6

Selected Round 2 Teams

At the Sports Ground a particularly hard and attractive game was won by South Sydney, with the play all-round high-class and never lacking interest. Stewart's kick was recalled, but Newtown at once rushed play to the left wing, then worked across goal, with W.Farnsworth and Stewart prominent, in sharp dashes through the ruck. But Gilbert was a defensive thorn in their side, and South Sydney came away, started by a well judged kick from Hallett, and worked down the right wing, with McCabe flitting about merrily. In the 25, near the touch-line, Cann wheeled smartly and passed in-field to McCabe, to Darmody, to Thompson, but the Blues were too thick, and he was pulled down. Securing the ball in the serums, Newtown were enabled to work clear, and gradually invaded South Sydney's territory. Nearing the 25 line, Spence, of South Sydney, was penalised for coming round the scrum too quickly, and Russell opened the scoring with a neat goal. Newtown, 2 to nil. This acted, as a stimulus to the Red and Green, who came away fast along the left wing. Hucker punting high, Spence, following fast, got under it, but came down short of the line. However, A.Butler secured at, the heels of his forwards, and whipped past McCabe to Cann, and then pretty passing followed, with Thompson and Gilbert dashing to the wing. The latter cut in and went on to Darmody, but Talbot forced him into touch. These movements thoroughly aroused the big crowd. Sturdy defence saved the Blues until fresh energy was imparted to their efforts by a spirited attack down the centre, the ball flying between Stewart, V. and W.Farnsworth. South Sydney were tackling soundly, and Newtown kept them busy in this particular, for they made the pace very warm. Had they supported R.Farnsworth better in his quick flashes past the opposing halves, better results would have followed. Gilbert and Thompson had to bear the brunt of the defence, and did it well. The game waxed faster, neither side securing much advantage, but both racing at their top pace, with the tackling deadly. A splendid burst in attack by South Sydney was heartily cheered. Butler sent a neat pass round the blind side of the scrum to the flying McCabe, who tricked R.Farnsworth, and went on, whipping it to Darmody when tackled. The wing three-quarter beat Talbot, who shot into touch. He tried to jump over the full-back, but Russell brought him down at the goal-line. The Blues replied vigorously, and with neat passing by the three-quarters, spoiled by V.Farnsworth clinging on, they monopolised the attack for some time. However, McCabe changed the scene again by punting along touch and following smartly, bustled a Blue back on the line, but failcd to get the ball. Across goal it went, and a splendid rally followed, but a Blue half-back ran around and tackled Butler, who had not got the ball, and Darmody landed an easy goal, making the scores 2 all, just on half-time.

The second half opened very fast. South Sydney soon added a score five minutes after opening. Russell had caught a high punt from A.Butler, but passed forward to Talbot, and from the scrum Butler sent to McCabe, who was downed inside the 25. In the ruck they struggled for a time, Cann picked up and passed to Gilbert, but he was collared. Following the scrum Spence pounced on it behind the Blue forwards, about five yards from the line, and forced himself over the line, though tackled. He went through with the force of a pocket hercales. Darmody's kick was successful, and South Sydney led by 7 to 2, to the delight of their thousands. Strenuous play followed, until Russell put his side in good position, and a free-kick against Cann for standing off-side gave him a chance at goal, but his attempt failed. Talbot, McCue, and Grumiie made herculean efforts to peice the sturdy defence of the Southerners, but Hallett, playing a splendid game, and Gilbert repeatidly drove them back. The Blue forwards were much more successful in the scrummage, and provided many opportunities of opening the game, for their backs, whose attack was lacking in variety and too easily checked, before the three-quarters were set in motion. However, their scoring was not yet finished as Stewart landed a line penalty goal from ten yards inside half-way, the ball sailing over the bar. South Sydney 7 to 4. Newtown, rising to the occasion, now made a gallant effort but it had an extraordinary ending. On his own side of half-way R.Farnsworth fielded the ball slightly on the right wing. He moved off diagonally, and gave the pass to Stewart, who got up pace quickly and ran Talbot into good position. Passing half-way, after cutting between two South Sydney men, he whipped it to Talbot, who ran very fast along touch past the 25. There he passed in, as Hallett faced him. If a Newtown back had got it, a try would probably have been scored. But Cann had run into position, took the pass, wheeled, and in an instant was speeding back down the field along touch. A very stirring series of passes ensued. He gave the first pass to Thompson, and cutting round, came into the rush again. They veered in for the goal, with McCabe, McCarthy, and finally Spence handling it. The pace was very fast, and when Spence dived over at the goal-post, the roar proclaimed the doom of Newtown. This dazzling football, which reversed a stirring attack almost from goal-line to goal-line, was capped by Darmoily landing the goal. South Sydney 12 to 4. A further penalty against South Sydney a few minutes later enabled Stewart to add another goal to Newtown's score, but the Red and Green finished victors by 12 to 6. Referee, Mr. T.McMahon.

Second Grade - Round 2

v Newtown, Sydney Sports Ground, 2:00pm

DRAW 7-7

Played at Sports Ground. The only score in the first half was by Martin, who kicked a penalty goal for Newtown. The second half opened at an even rate, and for the first 20 minutes tho teams attacked in turn, then a line kick put South Sydney on the aggressive, and from a resulting scrum and ruck work tho ball came to Downey, who cut through and forced his way over. Dymant added the extras for South Sydney. Newtown attacked hotly, but a penalty drove them back. South Sydney then took a turn at attack, and from a penalty Dymant added another two points for his side. Newtown secured five points before full time arrived a penalty goal by Martin and an unconverted try by Collins, making the scores, Newtown 7, South Sydney 7.
