Trevor Barnes
LOSS 9-11
Match was relocated to Lang Park after Leichhardt Council only allowed one game to be played during the week.
Manly fielding their weakest line-up of the season, last night ended the jinx of their clashes with South Sydney this year. Manly hung on grimly to defeat Souths 9-11 in their Amco Cup clash at Lang Park, Brisbane. Both sides scored a try in a dour match and goal kickers decided the issue. Manly hooker John Gray won the match with an easy penalty goal 10 minutes from full-time after Souths were penalised for a scrum breach. It was a tight match all the way. At quarter-time it was nil all, at half-time Manly led 2-7 and three-quarter time Manly 9-7. A cowd of about 3,000 saw South Sydney kick off at Lang Park. Manly without seven regular first graders, took a while to settle intotheir rhythm. Souths full-back Erick Fergusen missed with a penalty kick in the second minute. Souths also made further changes to their side when hooker Ken Stewart was a last minute replacement for Arthur Katinis. Manly hooker John Gray missed with his first two penalty attempts to leave the score 0-all at quarter time.. The first points of the game came in the second minute of the second quarter when Gray kicked a penalty goal from in front of the posts after Souths were caught offside. Three minutes later second-rower Bruce Walker was in for the first try of the game. Gray cobverted the try with a good goal to put Manly ahead 0-7. Souths first points of the game came in the eighth minute of the second quarter when Fergusen kicked a wide angled penalty goal. South Sydney lock Trevor Barnes who scored Souths' try midway through the third quarter when he pulled through two tackles after the Rabbitohs won a scrum, won the man of the match award. He finished one point ahead of Manly half Alan Thompson who had a terrific game highlighted by a try saving tackle on Souths prop John Peek.
