A gamble by Souths' stand in skipper Gay Wright nominating Terry Fahey to take a penalty gial attempt against Wests last night put the Rabbitohs into the Amco Cup semi-finals. Souths won the match at Leichhardt Oval 9-7 after Fahey broke the 7-all deadlock with a long-range goal six minutes from the end. Centre Gary Knight had taken the previous three kicks for two successes but Wright gambled with Fahey, who put his first attempt of the night over the crossbar. Wests hammered the Rabbitohs tryline in the dying staging but the defence held tight to put Souths in the semi-final against Cronulla on August 1.
