Reserve Grade - NSW Premier League - Round 5
v Canberra, Kippax Oval, Sunday April 15, 2:00pm
LOSS 10-38
On a high after their curse-breaking win against the Tigers at home last weekend, the Bears were brought back down to earth when they went on the road to confront a strong Raiders outfit on Sunday in Canberra. Ultimately going down 38-10 after never gaining the lead, a major factor in the loss for Bears was the absence of crucial first grade players, including Joe Galuvao, Jaiman Lowe and Yileen (Buddy) Gordon. "At the end of the day Canberra were just too big and too strong for us," coach Wayne Lambkin said. "We had a few injuries during the week and we didn't have the best pre-match preparation having to travel down to Canberra on the morning of the game, but that's no excuse." The Canberra crowd turned out in strength to support their team and gave the Raiders the lift they needed to stand up against the Bears and defeat them comfortably. The Raiders led for the entire match, starting out 6-nil with three quick consecutive tries just before half time. Lambkin said the Raiders were just too fast for the Bears, whose game was lacking pace. "It was as though we were playing in third gear and they were playing in first" Lambkin said. Despite the loss, Lambkin said the Bears had a couple of standout players who put in a strong effort. "Manase Manuokafoa and Jardine Bobongie put in a really good effort on Sunday," Lambkin said. The Bears will come up against the un-defeated Knights side this weekend in Newcastle. ``It will be a nice test,'' Lambkin said. ``I'm confident that we're capable of winning, especially as team performances and results can fluctuate so much from week to week.'' After analysing the Bears' shortcomings in the Canberra clash, Lambkin will be working with the boys at training during the week on their defence, which he found to be wanting. ``If we can get back to keeping our opposition from scoring tries like we did with Cronulla and Balmain then I think that's the way for us to win the game,'' he said.
