v Newtown, Henson Park, Sat Jun 14 3:00pm
WIN 46-12
Rampant Bears Claim the Frank Hyde Shield for 2008. The North Sydney Bears showed why they are the undefeated VB NSW Cup competition leaders and the 2008 premiership favourites when they disposed of the second-placed Newtown Jets 46-12 at Henson Park on Saturday. A big Henson Park crowd watched in delight as the Bears ran up a 20-0 halftime lead, and then amassed 4 tries in the final ten minutes of the game as the Jets resistance disintegrated. The resounding victory also delivered the Frank Hyde Shield into the Bears custody for 2008. Both sides had late team changes but the Bears took control right from the kick-off and led 10-0 after 15 minutes. Herekotukutuku's kick was charged down and the Bears re-gathered for Smith who spread the ball wide to Nichols and onto Hegarty who managed to score despite the Newtown defenders. Norths 4-0. Yileen Gordon soon after busted the line and palmed off the fullback before passing inside to Barnes who had enough speed and swerve to avoid the defenders and score. Nichols converted. 10-0. Herekotukutuku then makes a bust. Smith then fires a cut-out pass for Hegarty who scores his second try. 14-0. The Bears effectively locked up the result with a long-distance converted try thirty seconds before halftime, Nichols passes to Hegarty who runs down the sideline and kicks infield where Herekotukutuku toes the ball forward and regathers the bounce to score. Nichols converts right on halftime. 20-0. Norths utilised their faster backrow and backline to their best advantage and always looked sharper with the ball. In the second half sees a great no-look flick pass from Corrigan to Nasio who scores out wide. 24-0. The ball is spread to the left and Nasio returns the favour to Corrigan who scores. 28-0. A Newtown chip and chase sets up a try for Rudder. 28-6. Andersen barges over for Newtown in a mini comeback. 28-12. But the Bears hit back when Hegarty makes a quick 10m dart from dummy half to score his 3rd try. 32-12. Then Widders breaks through and passes to support who pass back to Widders who scores. Falloon takes over from Barnes and converts. 38-12. Then the Bears added two more tries in the first fifteen minutes of the game. Newtown fullback fumbles a Bears kick and Gordon picks up the loose ball and avoids the defenders to score. 42-12. Grant barges over, with Widders missing from in front. 46-12.
