Reserve Grade - NSW Cup - Round 20
v Bulldogs, Crest Stadium, Sat Aug 23 12:00pm
WIN 40-18
A solid but not a easy win for the Bears with some of the sparkle from earlier in the season on display, as well as some of the hard stuff. The Bears took the field with a massive wind behind them. John Koborsi started but was replaced almost immediately by Bladen Baird, who would not have been able to play in the following days North Sydney District Grand Final if he'd been in the starting 13. Baird is one of North Sydney contract players who have been "loaned" to Berowra and Asquith. Early in the game George Ndaira pushes over from dummy half to score and converted his own try. 6-0. 7 minutes later the Bulldogs hit back with a try in corner after moving ball along backline. Then in rapid succession midway through the half the Bears score 3 tries. The first, Tamanika scores in corner after receiving a great cut-out pass from Samu Wara, Ndaira converts from near sideline. Then Tamanika scores his second try in almost the same spot, was the result of great ball movement along backline. Greg Nichols involved. Ndaira converts again. Not quite from the kickoff, but from the first set. A 70 metre try started by a break by Yileen Gordon, then Charlie Herekotukutuku, Greg Nichols and finally to George Ndaira who scores. Great backing up, great running, great changes of direction. Ndaira converts try from 20 metres in. 24-4. But as the half closed the Bulldogs hit back with two tries and it was 24-14 at the break. Soon after half time saw a try to Bladen Baird after he was put through a gap with an excellent short pass from Korbosi. Nichols attempts conversion from sideline, but it's a shocker. 28-14. Then with 13 minutes on the clock, the Bulldogs have a player sin-binned and the Bears score on the next set when Ndaira gets his third try for the afternoon after some quick hands and running. Ndaira converts. 34-14. With 9 minuteson the clock the Bears seal the game with an excellent try. Jeremy Smith put through a grubber kick from 40m out, bounces nicely for Charlie Herekotukutuku who takes two steps and puts in another grubber that bounces nicely for Nichols who runs 20m to score, outpacing a couple of defenders on the way. Ndaira converts. 40-14. A late try by the Bulldogs and fulltime, with the Bears winning 40-18.
Then after the game concluded Dave Wynyard dashed off without taking a shower. He had to rush off to get ready for his wedding that afternoon.
