McQueen Signs for 2009
10th September 2008
Boom Seagulls centre Chris McQueen will continue to wear the Red & Green in 2009 but with a different emblem and in a different competition. After a strong year in the Qld Cup with Wynnum Manly, McQueen has shown enough potential to earn a Top 25 contract with the South Sydney Rabbitohs. Secured to a 2 year deal this should be enough time for Chris to establish himself as a permanent NRL player if he follows the development we have seen in him over the past three years. Originally from Kingaroy, Chris moved to Brisbane with twin brothers Ryan and Aaron Brown as a raw but talented trio that were inseparable. Early on they struggled with the change of environment and the extra work load but soon settled in and displayed some natural ability in their first year of Colts. They were exposed to some of the best talent in rugby league competing against a Norths Devils outfit containing stars such as Israel Filou and Will Chambers. Their destiny was a Grand Final berth in year one with the Colts against the Devils falling just short of the big prize. Since then Chris has not looked back. He got his opportunity at the backend of last season and finished playing 9 Qld Cup games for the Seagulls. This year he has been one of our most potent attacking weapons playing 19 games and developing into a damaging ball runner and improving his overall defensive game. He played centre most of this year but he is equally at home at fullback and on the wing. He hopes this progression can continue as he sets his sights on the NRL. It's a big step for a boy from the bush but I am sure he will take the opportunity and run with it. From a club point of view it is sad to see a player of such calibre leave but we are proud to have played a part in his development onto the big stage. From everyone at the club we wish Chris all the best and will keep a keen eye on him next year. I am sure he will feel that little more comfortable wearing the Red & Green.
