Wing 3rd Party Sponsor Concerns
4th December 2008
Rabbitohs star Craig Wing is in a dispute with a third-party sponsor. Wing had a contract with high-profile eastern suburbs real estate agent John McGrath - an external deal approved by the National Rugby League. Wing signed for four years when he left the Roosters for his junior club amid much acrimony at the end of last year. Wing's salary at Redfern was boosted by external 3rd party deals.
The deal with McGrath, has come unstuck over terms of the contract. Wing is required to do 18 hours work a week involving promotions and appearances with McGrath's real estate company as part of his arrangement, but it is reported that he is struggling to meet commitments.
South Sydney chief executive Shane Richardson said the breakdown of the McGrath-Wing deal did not have an impact, or put any pressure on, Wing's core contract with the club. "Craig hasn't approached us saying it is a problem," Richardson said. "This was a deal done externally and is really between Craig and John."
