WIN 52-12

The South Sydney Rabbitohs have destroyed the Sydney Roosters in the first leg of the Ron Coote Cup for 2009, running away with a 52 points to 12 victory at the Sydney Football Stadium in front of 24,486 fans. The Rabbitohs ran in nine tries to two in an absolutely dominant performance, with Chris Sandow and John Sutton starring for the men in cardinal red and myrtle green. The Rabbitohs blew the Roosters away in the opening 40 minutes, scoring five tries to one, including a double to noted try scorer Nathan Merritt. The Rabbitohs opened the scoring in the sixth minute of play when new recruit Colin Best crossed on the left hand side of the field. Best beat Anthony Minichiello, Mitchell Pearce and Sia Soliola to score out wide. Sandow’s conversion gave Souths a six-nil lead. Braith Anasta kicked off and put the ball dead on the full, giving the Rabbitohs another attacking opportunity. They took it with both hands, Merritt scoring his first try one minute later. John Sutton took the ball to the line and held up three defenders before offloading to Merritt on the right wing to score. Sandow converted from the sideline to give the Rabbitohs a 12-nil lead. The Roosters struck back in the 18th minute when Braith Anasta scored a messy try. Craig Fitzgibbon kicked his 1500th career point to bring the home side within six points of the good guys. Five minutes later, Rhys Wesser scored his first competition try in the red and green. Sandow grubber kicked through the line and followed it through, but clashed with a Roosters defender. The ball popped up for Wesser who scored. Sandow kicked his third conversion to restore the Rabbitohs 12-point lead. Three minutes later the video referee awarded the Rabbitohs a try to winger Fetuli Talanoa. It was John Sutton again who set up the play, this time on the left hand side of the field, chip kicking across field for Talanoa to leap and score in the corner. Sandow kicked his fourth conversion to give the Rabbitohs a 24-6 lead. In the 36th minute of play, Nathan Merritt scored his second try of the half when he took an intercept off Anasta close to his own line, and raced 98 metres to score. In the final minute of play, Sandow kicked a penalty goal after Mitch Aubusson took Jamie Simpson in a high tackle, giving the Rabbitohs a 30-6 half time lead. The Rabbitohs set up their attacking opportunities through the forwards, with Luke Stuart, Roy Asotasi, Shannan McPherson and David Fa’alogo all making metres. Sandow was controlling the side well, and Sutton, Best and Wesser all looked dangerous with their hands on the ball. The Rabbitohs started the second half on fire, with Merritt crossing for his third try in the 45th minute. John Sutton put in a long cross-field bomb to Merritt’s right wing, where he out-leapt Shaun Kenny-Dowall to score. The Roosters scored their second try in the 59th minute when Jake Friend dived over from dummy half to score. Fitzgibbon converted, reducing the deficit to 22 points. The Rabbitohs struck straight back, marching up field from a Roosters turnover. The ball went to Sutton again, who held up the defence, offloaded to Wesser who threw a long pass to Fetuli Talanoa on the left wing to score his second. Issac Luke converted from the touchline to bring up 40 points for the red and greens. The Rabbitohs scored again in the 66th minute when South Sydney junior Eddy Pettybourne crashed over on the left hand side. A short ball from Luke gave Pettybourne the opportunity to score. Luke converted the try to extend the Rabbitohs lead to 34 points with 12 minutes left on the clock. A little bit of Chris Sandow magic brought the Rabbitohs crowd to its feet in the 71st minute, when he chip-kicked for himself, regathering and scoring next to the uprights. Issac Luke converted to take the Rabbitohs out to a 52-12 lead. The Rabbitohs were completely dominant in their performance. Every time they had the ball in Roosters territory they looked dangerous. The halves combination of Sandow and Sutton was outstanding, with the Rabbitohs forward pack setting up the opportunities by making metres anywhere on the field.

v Wyong

Moree Breen Oval Kanwal, Sat Mar 7 5:00pm

WIN 26-20

Game was a tale of two halves. The first was a penalty a thon where Wyong struggled with the NSW Cup referee a lot and had a weak left wing which was exploited for the first 3 tries. Capewell played well setting up 2 tries and scoring a third.Interesting return to Souths for Robinson who was a class above the other backs. Justin Hunt, Trembath, Cleal and Tyrell also played well. For the second 40 the Bears put all of their bench players on and Wyong surged back with a few tries and regained confidence, before some late changes settled the Bears and wrapped up the match. Wyong won the second half 14-6

NSWRL U16 Matthews Rd4

v Parramatta, Erskenville Oval

DRAW 18-18

Souths five eight Kyole Dungay inspired South Sydney to a thrilling draw against the much fancied Parramatta team in the Harold Matthews Cup at Erskinville Oval yesterday. The Rabbitohs were down 18 - 6 early in the second half after Parramatta scored from a typical Jacob Gagen sprint to the line to score. At that stage the Eels were on fire with steam streaming from their slippery nostrils. It looked like Parramatta was going to go on to a big score. So what happened? Three things conspired to beat Parramatta. Firstly, an Eels player was sent to the sin bin for an infringement. Secondly, Jacob Gagen dropped the football. Parramatta supporters at the game said they hadn’t seen Gagen drop the ball since he was 10 years of age. People may have to wait for another 5 years to see it again! Thirdly and most importantly, Parramatta did not count on the silky football skills of crafty South’s five eight Kyole Dungay to inspire his team to an 18 all draw. Twice in the second half Dungay magic was woven to produce spectacular trys. Centre Tyrone Ranuku-Phillips scored in the corner after a magic Dungay grubber kick. With the conversion from the sideline Souths are now only behind 18-12 with a sniff of hope. A little while later Gagen drops the ball and it’s a Souths feed into the scrum. The Rabbitohs are on fire and attacking the Parramatta line. Step forward Mr Magic. Yes, it’s that man Dungay again and with a pinpoint cut-out pass straight onto the chest of the flying winger Conor Roxburgh who scores in the corner. Souths fans are almost delirious at this stage with the score now 18-16 with the conversion attempt to come and only two and a half minutes to the full-time hooter. The pressure now mounts on fullback James Roberts to make the conversion. Roberts was under the pump. His portrait was featured on the front cover of the Rugby League News program resulting in many local admirers of the fairer sex giving him plenty of attention yesterday. Could he live up to the hype? He places the ball on the kicking tee, takes five steps back, moves in and whooshka! Straight between the posts! James Roberts – you are a hero! An 18 all draw between two of leagues traditional rivals on a beautiful Sydney Autumn day. It doesn’t get better than that.
