Reserve Grade - NSW Cup Round 8
v Shellharbour, North Sydney Oval Sun May 10 2:30pm
WIN 36-12
Late changes - Apps, Falloon, Crossman, Johnston were out. Mansour starts on the wing, McQueen centre, Matt Hunt hooker, Geddes at prop, McPherson second row and Dalton on the bench. The North Sydney Bears put aside off-field dramas to beat Shellharbour Dragons 36-12 at North Sydney Oval on Sunday. Coach Wayne Lambkin said the Bears’ possible move to the Central Coast was on everyone’s mind. “Certainly, some of the younger players, who are 19 or 20, have the chance to play well (and earn contracts) in the 12 months,” he said. “You can’t just go and buy a whole new team under the salary cap. “You need some of those young guys in the team.” The excitement is reaching Bears officials as well. “You look around the club and you can see there are people genuinely ready for this to happen,” he said. “Even for me, I hope I can fit in there somewhere as an assistant coach or a recruitment manger of a Central Coast side.”
Bears open the scoring in the 3rd minute when the ball goes through the hands to Josh Mansour who races down the sideline to score. 4-0. 10 minutes later Ben Lowe offloads to Robinson who runs down the sideline and throws the ball in field to Matt Hunt who passes to Baird to score. Hogan converts. 10-0. At the 27 minute mark, Shellharbour knock-on over the line. A minute later Ben Lowe offloads to Baird who breaks through and is tackled just short of the line. David Tyrrell then barges over. Hogan's kick hits the post and goes out. 14-0. At the 32nd minute Shellharbour hit back when Jeff Zwolsman chips and regathers and passes to Daniel Fepuleai to score. Retimana converts. Halftime 14-6. After resuming, Wara catches a bomb to score under the posts. Hogan converts. 20-6. After 5 more minutes, Robinson streaks away before linking with Baird who passes to Hogan to score. 24-6. At the 55 minute mark, Shellharbour player barges over. 24-12. With 15 minutes to go, Wara makes a break and steps the fullback to score. Hogan convets. 30-12. Then with 5 minutes on the clock, Hogan puts in a chip kick for Sean Dalton to score. Justin Hunt converts and teh Fulltime score was 36-12. Lambkin said Sunday’s result was a good win. “There were more improvements in what we were trying to do on the weekend,” he said. “The positive was our defence and keeping our opposition to only 12 points. “Our attack was a bit more flowing because I think we are starting to understand each other’s games and we’re able to support each other better. “It’s about knowing what the blokes beside you in the team can do, and getting used to each other.” The Bears are now fifth, only one point outside the top four.
