2009 South Sydney League Club Annual General Meeting

25th May 2009

The 2009 Annual General Meeting of the South Sydney Leagues Club was held in the Long Room at Redfern Oval. A healthy crowd of over 90 people came to listen to Chairman Bill Alexiou-Hucker report on the years events and to also respond to questions from members and information reported in the media.

In an overwhelming show of support for the current Board, the full Board was returned with over 90% of valid votes going to the current board members. "It has been a frustrating 2 years for our members since the Leagues Club has been closed however most of our members understand that the Board , our CEO, Ken Stewart and Operations Executive Karen Levin are doing all they can to get the venue re-opened as quickly as possible". Members who attended the meeting, and those that attended the voting on Saturday, had the opportunity to get a firsthand look at the plans for the Leagues Club with the reaction from members highly favorable, creating an air of excitement at the anticipation of its reopening. It was also an opportunity for those who attended to hear directly from the builders and Football Club sponsors, Albert Bertini and Alistair Hood of Trivest/High Concept, regarding the progress of the building works and to ask questions of them. The main points that came out of the AGM were :

  • At the time of the Administration the building was purchased, by the Football Club, for $11.50 million. Some media had reported a sale of price of $7.5 million.
  • The Board has approved but has not yet incurred the liability for a $6.2 million to purchase the remaining floor space of the First Floor of the building. The loan will be taken out when the building is completed and strata title obtained. Therefore the club is not repaying any debt whilst the club is not trading. This $6.2m will purchase 1400 sq metres of the remaining floor space of the First Floor and allow the club members to enjoy greater facilities and provide the operations with more options for entertainment, conference and function facilities and dining. Two independent valuations provided the Board with the appropriate diligence on the accuracy of the purchase price. The $6.2 million also includes approximately 100 sq mts for the entrance to the Cub off Chalmers Street.
  • The builders, Trivest , are investing up to $30 million into the building to bring it up to "A Grade" status.
  • The Redfern Park Café should be open with the next fortnight (Council permitting) The Café will be a joint venture between local indigenous chef Aunty Beryl and the Leagues Club. The café will be managed by a leading chef from highly respected establishments such as Wategos-Byron Bay, Longrain , Roberts- Hunter Valley and Observatory Tower Bistro.
  • A motion to amend the Articles' of the Club giving members more time to receive notice of an upcoming Annual General Meeting and to nominate for the Board was unanimously approved by the attending members.

Members who attended the meeting also had the opportunity to view the café facilities and hear an update on the work we are doing on ensuring we celebrate and respect our history by way of our Heritage Exhibition.
