WIN 44-12

In the first game of a double header, the South Sydney Rabbitohs have hammered the Brisbane Broncos on home turf in Brisbane for the first time in 20 years tonight (Friday), beating the Queenslanders 44 points to 12 at a sold-out Suncorp Stadium. Rabbitohs five-eighth John Sutton was outstanding for South Sydney, playing a hand in six of the Rabbitohs’ eight tries, with centre Beau Champion scoring a hat trick and fullback Nathan Merritt a double. The opening moments of the first half were a tight tussle, with both sides mounting attacking raids with nothing coming to fruition. The Rabbitohs opened the scoring in the 16th minute when Champion scored the first of his three tries. South Sydney capitalised on repeat sets of six, with Sutton delivering a short ball for Champion to score. The Broncos bounced back three minutes later when Corey Parker cleaned up a grubber kick to score. Peter Wallace converted to give Brisbane their only lead of the game. In the 24th minute, Merritt scored his first try of the game, with Sutton again starting the play. Sutton gave the ball to Eddy Pettybourne who shifted the ball to Champion then on to Merritt to score. Chris Sandow converted to give the Rabbitohs a four-point lead. Champion scored his second one minute before the break, when the Rabbitohs again capitalised on a repeat set. Nathan Merritt slid across the face of the defence and gave a short ball to a direct-running Champion to score. Sandow converted to give the Rabbitohs a 16-6 lead at the break. The Rabbitohs were playing well, but more carnage was to come in the second half. In the 45th minute, Eddy Pettybourne was rewarded for his hard work in the opening stanza with a four-pointer. It was Sutton again who delivered the pass for Pettybourne who crashed over for the red and greens. Sandow’s conversion hit the posts and went in, extending the good guys’ lead to 16 points. The video referee awarded Champion his third try just four minutes later, with Sutton again giving the last pass for the score. Sandow’s conversion extended the lead to 22 points with 30 minutes remaining on the clock. Two minutes later Fetuli Talanoa crossed for his side’s sixth try. This time Ben Lowe made a break and dished the ball off to Best who then found Talanoa. ‘Tulz’ kicked ahead, chased, regathered and scored to take the Rabbitohs through the 30-point barrier. Broncos prop and Rabbitohs 2010 recruit David Taylor scored for the home side in the 55th minute after a good ball from Karmichael Hunt. Wallace converted to take the Broncos tally to 12. A penalty goal to Sandow in the 64th minute extended the Rabbitohs’ lead to 22 points, followed by an unfortunate incident which saw referee Tony De Las Heras stretchered from the field when he fell and had Tonie Carroll’s knee connect with his head. In the 69th minute, Rabbitohs rookie and Queenslander Dave Tyrrell scored his first NRL try in front of friends and family, spinning out of two tackles and bustling his way over the line to score. In the 75th minute, Merritt scored his second try when he gathered a bouncing Sandow kick which hit the crossbar. Issac Luke converted to finish the scoring at 44 points to 12. Sutton was the ring master for the Rabbitohs. South Sydney’s attack basically stemmed from him, with all of his charges making the most of the opportunities he created. Eddy Pettybourne was strong for Souths, with all players putting in a fantastic effort.

Reserve Grade - NSW Cup Round 16

v Balmain-Ryde Eastwood, Leichhardt Oval, Sun July 19 10:45am

LOSS 18-31

Late Changes - Ngaro was out. In a reshuffle, Johnston started wing, McQueen centre, Apps lock and Dalton on the bench. The North Sydney Bears’ 31-18 loss to Balmain Ryde-Eastwood Tigers was their worst match in three seasons, according to coach Wayne Lambkin. “There was every reason for us to go out and play well but that was just the worst performance in my three years at the Bears,” Lambkin said. “It was second-rate and I don’t think the players mind me saying that because they know it. “They lacked intensity and purpose on the field.” Lambkin said contributing factors to Sunday’s loss at Leichhardt Oval included the 10.45am kick-off and the number of byes during the season, which cost the team momentum. “We put 17 guys out there, just as they did,” he said. “But they just lived off our scraps - we made enough mistakes to make them look like a good side but really, they just had more enthusiasm.” Lambkin said the Norths players felt terrible after the match. “When you lose to a good side you can take that, because that’s footy,” he said. “But when you lose because you put pressure on yourself, it hurts.” Lambkin said he could not make too many changes because the Bears trained as a team only once a week. “I’d like to have a few options but the first time we trained together as a team was the day before the match.” David Kidwell played in this match. The Bears have slipped to sixth.
