WIN 40-20

The South Sydney Rabbitohs have secured the 2009 Ron Coote Cup with an emphatic 40 points to 20 victory over arch-rivals the Sydney Roosters in front of 11,031 Members and fans at ANZ Stadium tonight (Monday). Rabbitohs winger Jamie Simpson scored a hat trick of tries in his sides eight-tries-to-four romp over the Roosters, almost scoring a fourth only to be denied by the video referee. Simpson dedicated his performance to a friend, Todd Parnell, who passed away over the weekend in Brisbane. Simpson made a 'TP' symbol with his hands after scoring his first try. The Rabbitohs took home the Ron Coote Cup, having also defeated the Roosters in the opening round of the competition by 52 points to 20. The Rabbitohs opened with an early try to Simpson in the fourth minute, when a well worked backline play stretched the ball to the right wing for Simpson to score. Just six minutes later he scored his second, with the ball swung to the right again. The Roosters’ defence was more switched on this time, however Simpson was strong enough to bounce out of three tackles to score in that familiar right hand corner. In the 20th minute, hooker Issac Luke was awarded a try by the video referee, after burrowing through two defenders to score adjacent to the left hand upright. Chris Sandow’s conversion gave the Rabbitohs a 14-nil lead after the first quarter. The Rabbitohs go-to-man, John Sutton, was the next to score, with the five-eighth showing all the skills, stepping, dummying and scoring on the right hand side of the field. The Roosters finally struck back in the 28th minute through Mitchell Aubusson, but the Rabbitohs had opened up a sizable lead at the break, 18 points to 4. In the 49th minute of play, Roosters second-rower Willie Mason was sin-binned for a professional foul, giving the Rabbitohs great field position. One minute later, Eddy Pettybourne touched down for his side’s fifth try after hitting a short ball from Sutton and crashing over. Sandow converted to give the Rabbitohs a 20-point advantage. Roosters’ winger Shaun Kenny-Dowall pegged one back for the visitors, before Simpson scored his third try in the 66th minute. With the play looking like it had broken down, Sandow took control of the ball and delivered a pin-point accurate cross field bomb that covered about 45 metres, to find a leaping Jamie Simpson in the right hand corner. The Rabbitohs had re-established their 20-point break and were flying in attack...literally. Two minutes later, the good guys struck again through serial try-scorer Nathan Merritt. Issac Luke made a break up the middle of the field before offloading to Merritt who raced 60 metres to score under the black dot. Sandow’s conversion extended the lead to 34-8. Nine minutes from full time Simpson was denied a fourth try after one of the referees called the play back for a forward pass. The Rabbitohs then let in tries to Jake Friend and Mitchell Pearce, the Roosters reducing the deficit to 14 points. The Rabbitohs then sealed the win in the 79th minute when Craig Wing crossed for the final try of the night, slicing through the Roosters defence. Sandow’s conversion after the siren finished the scoring at Rabbitohs 40 – Roosters 20. South Sydney Head Coach Jason Taylor said he was pleased overall with his side’s performance. “We had to get the job done tonight, and that’s what we did,” Taylor said. “They came out hard at us in the opening sections of both halves, and we did well to not only hold them but gets points against them. “We would have liked to have done it a bit better tonight, but we’re happy with the win.

Reserve Grade - NSW Cup Round 17

v Auckland Vulcans, Mt Smart Stadium #2, Sat Jul 25 11:00am NZT

WIN 28-8

Late changes - Dalton dropped off the bench. North Sydney Bears secured a place in the NSW Cup rugby league finals with their 28-8 win over Auckland Vulcans. With Saturday’s fast-finishing win in Auckland the Bears snared a nine-point lead over ninth-placed Windsor, with four competition matches and a bye remaining. “We’re now looking at the top four and we’re close enough if we are good enough,” coach Wayne Lambkin said. “Even at this stage of the year we are still learning. “But if we continue to try and achieve, we’ll be fine.” The Vulcans led 8-6 in the 63rd minute and looked likely to extend their lead when Chris McQueen scored an intercept try. Five minutes later the Bears scored another try against the run of play. “They were attacking our line again and put a grubber through and Justin Hunt picked it up and passed to Deon Apps, who ran the length of the field and scored a try,” Lambkin said. “That broke their spirit and we went on with it from there.”
