Titans 28 Defeat Rabbitohs 22 in Coffs Harbour Trial Match The South Sydney Rabbitohs have fallen just short of defeating a near-full strength Gold Titans at BCU International Stadium in Coffs Harbour tonight, going down 28 points to 22 in front of 5,500 supporters. The Rabbitohs dominated the Titans in the first forty minutes, however trailed 10 points to six at the break. The Rabbitohs dominance was thanks to their forward pack which was missing the likes of captain Roy Asotasi; new recruits Sam Burgess, David Taylor and Ben Ross; and hardman Michael Crocker. Captain for tonight's game, Luke Stuart, led from the front with help from Eddy Pettybourne and Issac Luke. Halfback Chris Sandow shone in the opening half, with he and half-partner John Sutton controlling the game. Hooker Luke was the first to score in the 13th minute after Sandow set up the play. At first receiver, Sandow took the pass and scooted across field, dummying to straight runners before finding the chest of Luke who charged over under the posts. Sandow converted to give the Rabbitohs a 6-0 lead at the quarter-time break. Luke Capewell made a break in the second stanza after Pettybourne popped a great ball to the charging fullback, but it was the Titans who would score two second quarter tries to through Mat Rogers and Clinton Toopi to lead 10-6 at half time. Capewell scored his first try in the 48th minute after Dylan Farrell made a break down the right hand side of the field, finding Capewell backing up inside playing in the five-eighth position to score. The Titans struck back through Riley Brown in the 53rd minute, before Capewell scored his second try four minutes later. This time it was winger Jamie Simpson making a break from his own 30 metre line, drawing fullback William Zillman before offloading to Capewell who ran 45 metres to score. The scores were locked at 16-all at the three quarter-time break, but the Titans ran on their full forward pack for the final quarter, giving them some go forward which saw them score tries through Scott Prince and Zillman to take the game. The Rabbitohs struck back in the final three minutes when Junior Vaivai crossed in the left hand corner. Ben Lowe put Vaivai through the gap on the left hand side. Chris Sandow kicked the conversion from the touchline despite Titans five-eighth Greg Bird walking between the kicker and the ball as Sandow was about to move in for his shot at goal. Rabbitohs Head Coach John Lang said he achieved what he set out to in this trial match. "We gave a lot of guys their first run for the season and a lot of our young guys got some good time on the field against strong opposition," Lang said. "I thought our forwards played strongly throughout the game, especially in the first half, and our halves were pretty strong tonight. "If we were playing in a Grand Final then both Taylor and Burgess could have played, but we weren't so they didn't. Taylor is still favouring his ankle and Sam was a bit sore from the All Stars game so we thought it was best to rest them this week and play them against the Dragons in the Charity Shield next week."
