LOSS 18-19
The South Sydney Rabbitohs have suffered a heartbreaking 19 points to 18 defeat at the hands of the Gold Coast Titans in golden point extra time tonight (Friday), in front of 10,943 Members and supporters. Scott Prince’s 82nd minute field tore the heart out of the Rabbitohs faithful at ANZ Stadium tonight, with the game in the balance at the end of regular time. Two tries to centre Beau Champion were not enough to get the victory over the visitors in the end. Neither was a spirited comeback and a momentum shift late in the second half. The Rabbitohs were the first strike through Champion who crossed in the ninth minute. A long ball from fullback Rhys Wesser found the mark and gave Champion the opportunity to post first points. Issac Luke converted to give the Rabbitohs a six-nil lead. The Titans levelled five minutes later when fullback William Zillman scored on the left. Prince converted to level the scores at six-all. The Titans snuck ahead in the 35th minute when Anthony Laffranchi crashed over from close range, with Prince’s conversion giving the visitors a 12-6 lead at the break. Sam Burgess was pulling off some heavy defence in the first 40 minutes, and Issac Luke was doing more running out of dummy half. His scoots were causing the Titans’ defence problems throughout the opening stanza. It was a tight tussle in the opening minutes of the second half, before Joseph Tomane scored in the 49th minute. A grubber kick to the right hand corner from Prince found Tomane who posted the points. Beau Champion was put on report in the 52nd minute for a tackle on Greg Bird, but made amends seven minutes later when he scored his second try for the night. Halfback Chris Sandow put Champion through a hole on the right hand side of the field, taking advantage of repeat sets of possession when Sam Burgess earned a penalty from Bird. Issac Luke’s conversion brought the home side within four points of their opponents. Titans hooker Nathan Friend was sin-binned in the 63rd minute after repeated infringements. The Rabbitohs took advantage of the extra man when Dave Tyrrell scored his first try for the season just two minutes later. He ran hard at the line with a hit and spin, and crossed for his side’s third four-pointer. Issac Luke converted again to give the Rabbitohs a two-point buffer. The Rabbitohs were full of confidence at this point and had completed a shift in the momentum of the match. The video referee denied Beau Champion a third try which would have sealed the game with only seven minutes remaining. With just one minute left on the clock, the referees evened the ledger when they sent Sandow to the sin bin for ten minutes, giving the Titans a chance to level the scores with a penalty shot at goal. Prince’s wobbly attempt hit the right hand upright and ricocheted between the posts to level the scores at 18-all after 80 minutes. The Rabbitohs were penalised for a strip in the 81st minute of play, allowing the Titans to work their way up field. In the 82nd minute, Prince put boot to ball and slotted a field goal to deliver his side the two competition points. Rabbitohs Head Coach John Lang said after the game: “I didn’t think we were out of it at any stage and never thought that we had won it. “We had chance to kill them off, but so did they. “I’m disappointed at not getting the two points but we’re coming together as a football team. The effort was good and it was a good step forward tonight.” Lang said he wouldn’t comment on the referees. “It’s not my area of expertise,” he said. “I don’t know if they were over the top or not. “I’ll be seeking some guidance from Finchy (referees boss Robert Finch) and his crew.” Rabbitohs captain Roy Asotasi said he felt that a lot of penalties were awarded during the game. “It felt like a game at Rugby Union at times,” Asotasi said. “You get that sometimes. You can’t keep pointing the finger though. “You have to rise above that. “I feel that we’re coming together as a team and we will continue to get better.” Lang responded to queries about his use of the interchange, saying: “I have confidence in my interchange players. “You have your best players on the field for as long as you can, and I like to start with my best team, and finish with them. “I’ve found that if you show confidence in your players they can do the job. “The more games these guys play the longer they will be able to play.” Lang said he was pleased with the improvements his charges made tonight. “I think we played generally better tonight,” Lang said. “We started to show that our combinations are coming through. “I think Sam’s (Burgess) still finding his feet. I never expected him to come out here and tear people to pieces. He’s an outstanding young player and he will get better and better. “I think we saw some of the old Rhysy (Wesser) there tonight too. It’s only his fourth game with this side, and it’s only Dave Taylor’s second game. “I’m still getting my act together as well. “We’ll get better.”

LOSS 16-44
Late changes, Martin field was added to the bench and Fifita and Ryan Apps dropped off the interchange bench. The North Sydney Bears went down to the Newtown Jets by 44 to 16 in Round 2 of the NSW Cup at Henson Park on Saturday. The match was also the first match of the three match series between the clubs for the Frank Hyde Shield. Newtown scored two early tries to take a 12-nil lead and scored a lucky run-away try before the end of the first half to have an 18-nil lead over North by halftime. Newtown came out blazing in the second half and made the most of their size advantage in the forwards. They scored three tries in the first ten minutes to take a 32-nil lead. With the result looking out of reach the Bears put some points on the board. First lock Deon Apps offloaded to James Nightingale who put Eddie Paea through a gap and on a 25 metre run before he linked with Joe Williams who was tackled short of the try line. From the play the ball the footy was passed to Paea who crossed for a try. Paea was in again 10 minutes later when he spotted a gap and scooted over. Newtown added two more tries to take a 44-12 lead before Norths were able to score once more when Luke Capewell scored from a Curtis Johnston offload. The Bears will be looking to improve on their early season form in the coming weeks and will be boosted by the return of some key players from injury. A highlight for Bears fans is the return to the club of halfback Joe Williams, who is well remembered after his great form helped the Bears to the 2007 grand final. Joe showed he has lost none of his class after returning to rugby league from a stint in boxing.
