WIN 30-8
The South Sydney Rabbitohs have registered their first competition points for the 2010 season with a convincing 30 points to eight defeat of the Cronulla-Sutherland Sharks at Toyota Stadium tonight (Monday), in front of 10,741 supporters. The Rabbitohs racked up five tries to two, including another double to Beau Champion and Sam Burgess’ maiden four-pointer in the NRL. Hooker Issac Luke, who missed the team warm up after taking his fiancée to hospital before the match, scored 12 points himself in a polished performance. The Sharks opened the scoring on the back of repeat sets in the seventh minute of play. The Sharks ran to the blindside from the scrum and scored through winger Luke Covell to go out to an early four-point lead. The Rabbitohs struck back five minutes later, when centre Beau Champion scored his first of two opening-half tries. Five-eighth John Sutton ran to the right hand side of the field, dragging in the defenders then offloading to Champion who ran a beautiful in-line to score. Issac Luke converted to give the Rabbitohs a 6-4 break. In the 18th minute, Champion crossed for his second. The Rabbitohs made the most of repeat sets, sending the ball to the right hand side again. With the defence pressuring, Chris Sandow tapped the ball deftly down the backline eventually finding Nathan Merritt who gave a good inside ball to Champion to score. Issac Luke converted from the touchline to stretch the Rabbitohs’ lead to eight. Just four minutes later, opposite Rabbitohs centre Colin Best crossed on the left hand side this time. Sharks fullback Albert Kelly dropped a terrifying John Sutton torpedo bomb, setting up a repeat set of six for the visitors. The ball went left and Best carried three over the line to score. Luke converted to to give the Rabbitohs an 18-4 lead. The Rabbitohs' attack seemed to be clicking, but their defence was equally as impressive in the first 40 minutes. At the back-end of the half, South Sydney repelled four sets of six in their own half, and Scott Geddes pulled off the hit of the half when he cut Trent Barrett in half in the penultimate minute of the first 40. The Rabbitohs were the first to score in the second stanza when second-rower Sam Burgess scored his first NRL try. Burgess charges onto an Issac Luke inside ball from five metres out, and no one was going to stop him from short range. Luke converted to give the Rabbitohs 20-point buffer. The Sharks struck back when Blake Ferguson collected a dropped bomb to give the Sharks supporters a little bit of hope. The Rabbitohs replied in the 61st minute when Issac Luke strolled through the Sharks flimsy defence to score under the black dot. The Rabbitohs came to the right and Sutton put Luke in some space, spinning out of one tackle around his ankle to reach out and score. Chris Sandow converted to take the scoreline to 30-8 in favour of South Sydney. Both sides had chances to post more points at the back end of the game, but poor handling put a stop any further scoring. With the game out of reach, the Rabbitohs took the foot off the throttle and coasted to a 30-8 victory away from home. Rabbitohs Head Coach John Lang said he was relieved to have posted his first competition points as Head Coach of the Rabbitohs. “In the end it was pretty comfortable, but it was a tough, gritty performance,” Lang said. “The guys grafted away for the 80 minutes. I can tell you that I’m very relieved.” Lang said tonight’s match was a good way to tick over the first two points of the season. “It’s a good win for us,” Lang said. “We worked hard for this game and we got the points.” Lang commented on Issac Luke’s performance tonight. “I don’t think much worries Issac,” Lang said. “He kept us informed of where he was and how long he would be all along the way. “He had a good game tonight.” Lang was also happy with the performance of Beau Champion. “He’s very dangerous,” Lang summarised. “I don’t think he’s 100% in gear yet either.” Rabbitohs Captain Roy Asotasi added: “We were under pressure internally I think. We expected more of ourselves and we challenged ourselves.

LOSS 12-18
Late changes, Atula has been replaced by Nicholls and Crossman was out. Tewha moved up to starting prop and Webster came into the starting line up in the second row. THE North Sydney Bears are yet to put points on the premiership board, losing to Balmain Ryde Eastwood 18-12 in round three of the 2010 NSW Cup. Both teams suffered in hot conditions at Sunday’s match at T.G. Millner Field, Marsfield. “It was one of the worst days I’ve been to football and I was only on the sidelines,” Bears coach Wayne Lambkin said. “And it showed in the game, there was a lot of spilt ball. “The Tigers weren’t in top form either.” With the lion’s share of possession, the Tigers led 6-0 at half-time. A strong defensive display from the Tigers in the second half was enough to secure the match. “Although everyone was feeling the heat, from the first 10 minutes of the second half their forwards had set a platform for the team and we struggled,” Lambkin said. The Bears’ third loss from three rounds comes after a run of hot match conditions and a spate of injuries in their forwards. “We have at least nine players out injured from the trials and the first round,” Lambkin said. “You can’t win games without front rowers - they absorb and deal out punishment, so it makes it really hard on the other players.” Although players sidelined by injury are not expected back on the field for some weeks, Lambkin is pleased with the efforts of his players and confident a win is not far away. “Grand finals aren’t won in March and I’m really pleased with how the guys have been playing,” he said. “The players are getting such great experience, which will give the team good depth.”
