LOSS 22-30

The South Sydney Rabbitohs have fallen eight points short of defeating the Manly-Warringah Sea Eagles at ANZ Stadium this afternoon (Sunday), going down 30 points to 22 in front of 15,459 Members and supporters. Beau Champion scored a double but it was not enough to get the home side over the line against a focussed and committed Manly outfit. The Sea Eagles opened up a 10-nil lead after 20 minutes through tries to Michael Robertson and Ben Farrar. The Rabbitohs were muscling up in defence with Sam Burgess, Dave Taylor and Issac Luke punishing their opposition a number of times, before Taylor crossed for South Sydney’s first try in the 28th minute. Taylor was lurking out wide on the left hand side, beating three defenders to get over the line for his second try in two weeks in South Sydney colours. Issac Luke converted to take the scores to 10-6. The Sea Eagles posted their third try in the 37th minute through Matt Cross, and a 40th minute penalty goal to Jamie Lyon gave Eagles an 18-6 lead at the break. The Sea Eagles dominated the opening half, but the Rabbitohs were not out of the game just yet. Manly asserted themselves in the second half, scoring two more tries through Lyon and Anthony Watmough, giving themselves a 30-6 lead after 52 minutes. Issac Luke sparked the Rabbitohs in the 58th minute when he crossed after a big burst from Eddy Pettybourne. Pettybourne and Luke were lifting the intensity for the side and it was showing on the scoreboard. Luke converted his own try to cut the lead to 18 points. In the 67th minute, Champion scored his first try after John Sutton put up one of his trademark torpedo bombs to Farrar. The ball was spilled due to pressure from Sutton’s kick and Sandow’s chase. The ball was spun to the right, and Champion crossed with a benefit of the doubt ruling from the video referee. Champion scored again in the 71st minute when Sutton put him through a hole, and Luke’s conversion brought the home side within eight points. That’s where it would finish for round eight, with Head Coach John Lang admitting the Rabbitohs could not quite match with Manly today. “The better team won so I was happy we could fight back to within eight in the end,” Lang said. “I thought they out did us in the yardage battle. “I thought we got some rough calls in the first half, but the better team won so that’s the end of the story.” Lang said the Sea Eagles were one of the heavyweight teams in the competition. “They’re going to be very hard to beat,” Lang explained. “I was pleased we were able to come back as far as we did. It’s good for our for and against. “We could have played better than what we did, and I thought our effort was good. “Today’s performance will be good for us because we need to test ourselves against the best. “We found out today that we’re not quite up to their level yet but we’re on the improve.” Rabbitohs captain Luke Stuart said: “It was good sign the guys didn’t give up (the comeback).”

NSW Cup Rd8

v Wentworthville

North Sydney Oval

Sun May 2, 3:00pm

LOSS 16-38

Late changes, Corrigan and Itula were out Williams played fullback, Talanoa to the wing, Ryan Apps to the centres. Falloon was back at hooker and Molan moved to the backrow. Bench was Tawha, Field, Hunt and Michael Tiopira. The Bears had their seventh loss from eight games when beaten 38-16 by Wentworthville Magpies at North Sydney Oval on Sunday. After starting strongly and completing all their sets in the opening 10 minutes, the Bears coughed up possession on their next few sets. Coach Wayne Lambkin said Wenty took full advantage of the mistakes to lead 32-0 at halftime. “We need to concentrate for the full 80 minutes,” he said. “We’re doing dumb things.” Pushed passes, dropped balls and forward passes were repeated in a forgettable opening half. “We made a couple of silly errors and they scored off each,” Lambkin said. The Bears improved their completion rate in the second half and outscored the Magpies 16-6. “It wasn’t the prettiest football in the second half but they were having a go and putting more pressure on by controlling the football,” Lambkin said.
