WIN 42-22

The South Sydney Rabbitohs have defeated one of the competition front-runners in the Penrith Panthers today at ANZ Stadium, running out convincing 42 points to 22 winners. 11,108 Members and supporters watched the Rabbitohs run in seven tries to the Panthers’ four in a display that saw the Rabbitohs’ back row smash anything that moved, and fullback Rhys Wesser had his best game in the red and green since leaving the Panthers at the end of 2008. The Rabbitohs set their defensive wall early, holding the Panthers out for three consecutive set in the first seven minutes. The Rabbitohs were the first to cross the line in the eighth minute when Chris Sandow cleaned up a loose ball from his own bomb, only to have the video ref deny the halfback the points. It was only six minutes later that the Rabbitohs registered the first points of the game when Queensland State of Origin representative David Taylor charged over from five metres out having played a hand in three of the lead up plays to put South Sydney in a position to score. Issac Luke converted the try to give Souths a six-nil lead. The Panthers levelled the scores in the 20th minute when Brad Tighe scored a try and Michael Gordon converted. The video referee again denied South Sydney a try, this time to Ben Lowe in the 24th minute when another Sandow bomb was spilled by Penrith. It was only one minute later though that the Rabbitohs registered more points, this time through five-eighth John Sutton. Sutton headed to the right and dummied before slicing through the defence to score. Luke converted to restore the six-point advantage. It was that Issac Luke who scored next in the 30th minute, stretching out from dummy half after a long break from Nathan Merritt gave the Rabbitohs some good field position. He converted his own try to take the scores out to 18-6. Rhys Wesser scored the first of two tries in the 33rd minute after chimed into the backline on the right hand side and sliced through the defence to score against his alma mater. Luke again converted to take the scores to 24-6 in favour of the Rabbitohs at the break. The Rabbitohs established what looked to be an unassailable lead just two minutes after the break when Wesser put on an identical play that led to his first try, to score again. Luek converted to give the Rabbitohs 24-point advantage early in the second stanza. The video referee was more kind to Panthers fullback Lachlan Coote in the 47th minute, awarding him the first of two tries to take the score to 30-10. Gavin Cooper was the next to score for the visitors in the 53rd minute, and Lachlan Coote’s second positive video referee decision in the 64th minute had Rabbitohs’ members biting their fingernails with the scoreline sitting at South Sydney 30 – Penrith 22. The Rabbitohs little livewire halfback then came into his own when he headed to the left-hand flank in the 68th minute. Needing something to spark his side, Sandow grubber kicked through the defensive line, collected the ball himself then beat the defenders in front of him to score the try that buried the Panthers. As usual, Luke converted to give the Rabbitohs 14-point buffer with ten minutes remaining in the match. Both South Sydney second rowers in Dave Taylor and Sam Burgess nearly scored tries in the next five minutes, but it was noted try scorer Beau Champion who crossed in the 79th minute who took the scoreboard over 40. Champion charged down a kick and raced 70 metres to score under the sticks. Luke converted taking the final scoreline to 42-22 in favour of the cardinal and myrtle. The Rabbitohs were very good on the field today, right across the park. Wesser was very strong at the back, the halves in Sutton and Sandow controlled the play, the back row smashed everything that moved and solidified the edge defences on both sides of the field and the front row kept going forward all day. Rabbitohs Head Coach John Lang was happy with side’s performance today. “We weren’t really home at any stage today until right at the end but it was a good performance,” Lang said. “Chris Sandow gave us something to kick away. I always know that he’s got something like that in him. “Rhysy (Wesser) was really good today. He scored two tries and gradually he’s getting back to his best. He’s starting to fire for us. He’s always been good in the basics of the game but his attacking game took another step today.” Rabbitohs captain Roy Asotasi said his side still has plenty of improvement in them, but made special mention of his 11 and 12. “Sam (Burgess) and Dave (Taylor) were dominant in the game today,” Asotasi said. “We played strongly today and we knew we had to go out there and meet them today. “We played well but there’s patches in the second half we have to improve on.” Panthers Coach Matthew Elliott was full of praise for Souths. “They were superior to us,” he said. “They were ready for us, and they dished it out in style.” Panthers stand-in captain Luke Lewis was succinct in his summation of the game. “They ran harder than us and we gave them too ball,” he said.
