LOSS 25-26
A crowd of 11,661 at Brookvale Oval witnessed an amazing finish to the round 15 match between the Rabbitohs and the Sea Eagales, with Manly-Warringah kicking two field goals in the last three minutes to snatch a 26-25 victory. The Rabbitohs mounted a big second half comeback to put themselves in a position to take the two competition points, but Manly halfback Trent Hodkinson kicked two field goals in the 77th and 79th minutes to steal the win. The Rabbitohs got away to a slow start allowing Manly centre Steve Matai to cross for the first try in the fourth minute of play. The Kiwis’ centre crossed out wide on the left, and Shane Rodney’s conversion gave the home side a 6-nil lead. A big defensive play from Colin Best in the 12th minute and big bust from Dave Taylor three minutes later seemed to switch the momentum, and it was not long before the Rabbitohs capitalised. Returning hooker Issac Luke scored a try in the 17th minute of play after the Rabbitohs received a number of repeat sets from Manly ill-discipline. A big left foot step and swift 12 metre charge to the line saw Luke cross underneath the posts. He converted his own try to level the scores. Two minutes later it was the plucky dummy half again who scored a wonderful team try to take the lead for the first time in the match. Halfback Chris Sandow took on the line and made a neat break, offloading to big second rower Sam Burgess. ‘Slammin’ Sam’ charged up field, drawing the fullback and offloading to Luke who was backing up superbly. Luke out-paced two of his opposition to race 50 metres and score under the posts again. He converted to take the scores to 12-6 in favour of South Sydney. The video referee awarded Matai in second try for the Sea Eagles in the 27th minute after a valiant effort from Nathan Merritt to drive him into touch before scoring. Rodney converted from the sideline to level with scores at 12-all. Both teams traded attacking raids over the next ten minutes, with some poor handling thwarting a couple of chances for the Rabbitohs. With about 40 second remaining on the clock in the first half, Chris Sandow snapped over a field goal from 20 metres out to give the Rabbitohs a one-point advantage at the half time break. Sam Burgess was looking dangerous on the right hand side, seemingly always with a loose arm looking for an offload. But it was his second row partner in big Dave Taylor that was causing the Sea Eagles some damage and some sleepless nights to come. His giant frame and excellent ball skills had the Sea Eagles’ right hand side defence in sixes and sevens at times in the first 40 minutes. John Sutton and Chris Sandow were running the show, and if not for a couple of loose handling errors in the back end of the half, the Rabbitohs could have found themselves further in front at the break. The Sea Eagles struck immediately in the second half, taking a short kick off and regathering before Matt Ballin scored from dummy half. Rodney converted to give the Eagles the lead 18-13 early in the second stanza. The Rabbitohs held out three sets on their own line in a fantastic defensive effort, however in the 57th minute big Manly winger Tony Williams beat two defenders to score Manly’s next try, giving them a 24-13 lead. The Rabbitohs struck back immediately, forcing an error from the Eagles on the kick off. From the ensuing scrum, Sandow skipped across field and drew the defence, offloading to Rhys Wesser who beat five defenders to score out wide on the right hand side in the 59th minute. Luke converted to reduce the deficit to five points. The Rabbitohs snatched the lead in the 65th minute when they capitalised on a forced error by Manly. From the ensuing scrum Sandow scooted out to the right, used Burgess as a decoy and slipped past Josh Perry to score wide on the right. He pointed to the air, then the rabbit over his heart when scoring, with Issac Luke slotting the extra two points from out wide to take the lead 25-24 with 12 minutes left on the clock. Nathan Merritt was denied a try by the video referee after he ruled that Merritt bounced the ball just inside the dead ball line in the 72nd minute of play. The Rabbitohs were denied another try in the 76th minute to Issac Luke, this time because of obstruction from Dave Taylor. Then the unthinkable happened. Manly halfback Trent Hodkinson snapped a field goal with three minutes left on the clock to level the scores at 25-all. Then with just one minute remaining, it was Hodkinson who kicked his second field goal in two minutes to snatch the victory, 26-25 in favour of the home side.

LOSS 10-52
Late Changes. Mitch Stephens replaced McLean at fullback. Nightingale replaced Molan. Tawha dropped off the bench. The struggling Bears were beaten 52-10 by Canterbury Bankstown Bulldogs 52-10 at North Sydney Oval last Saturday. Nightingale said the Bears forwards needed to muscle up in defence. ``Once we set the platform in defence, our attack will follow,’’ he said. The Bears swapped their traditional red and black jersey for a white one against the Bulldogs to mark one of the most remarkable days in the club’s history. They wore a white strip, which become known as the Roy Francis jersey after the Bears’ Welsh coach who introduced it to the club in 1970. In a match against Canterbury at Belmore on March 29, 1970, Bears captain Ken Irvine led his side from the field in protest at referee Keith Page. Nightingale said wearing the white jersey was like turning the clock back 40 years. ``There’s always a lot of history at the North Sydney club and to have an occasion like that to wear the white jersey was special,’’ he said. ``It was disappointing from our point of view that we didn’t put on a show for our fans. ``We haven’t delivered for our fans so far, so we are certainly charged up to do that for the rest of the season.’’
