LOSS 14-18
A crowd of 18,424 saw the South Sydney Rabbitohs fall just four points short against the Sydney Roosters at the Sydney Football Stadium. The Roosters scored three tries to two in a very willing affair. In a high energy, very physical first half of Rugby League, the Rabbitohs were the first to strike through hooker Beau Falloon. South Sydney made the most of a repeat set of six to work their way to the line. Falloon dived over from dummy half under the posts to score in the third minute of play. Chris Sandow kicked the conversion for a six-nil lead. Sandow extended the red and green’s lead to eight when he slotted a penalty goal, and after 21 minutes South Sydney led eight-nil. The Roosters struck back four minutes later when Toss Carney spun out of a tackle at close range to score. He converted his own try to reduce the Rabbitohs’ lead to two. The Rabbitohs were smashing anything that moved, with Englishmen Sam Burgess clearly on a mission to halt every Roosters attacking raid. The Rabbitohs also seemed to be targeting the Roosters’ little men in defence, putting a number of big hits on Mitchell Pearce, Carney and Anthony Minichiello. The battle of the forward packs was salivating in the wet conditions with neither pack taking a backward step. It took 18 minutes of the second half for the scoreboard to tick over again, when the Roosters scored in the right hand corner through Sam Perrett. Carney’s conversion gave the Roosters a 12-8 lead with 20 minutes remaining. The Rabbitohs laid on a beautiful try in the 64th minute with Fetuli Talanoa claiming the four-pointer. The ball came left to Dave Taylor who turned the ball inside to Nathan Merritt. Merritt lobbed a pass to Colin Best who drew two defenders before passing to talanoa, who beat two defenders himself to score. Sandow converted from the sideline to give the Rabbitohs a two-point advantage. The Roosters snatched a try in the 77th minute after a dubious penalty on the fifth tackle gave the home side great field position. Mitchell Aubusson charged on to a Carney pass and scored on the left hand side. Carney converted to give the Roosters a four-point lead with a minute to go. The Rabbitohs had one final attacking opportunity but it came to nothing, with the Rabbitohs falling four points short, 18 points to 14 at full time. You can’t take anything away from the effort of the Rabbitohs, giving it their all right until the final siren.

WIN 24-19
Late Changes, Mark Talanoa came onto the wing for Itula. Tyrell came in at second row with D.apps dropping back to lock. Webster dropped back to the bench. Tawha dropping off the bench. Bears coach Wayne Lambkin said his team’s less-experienced players were revelling in the return of senior players such as Craig Stapleton, Jamie Simpson and Luke Capewell. ``Having these guys back makes a big difference,’’ he said. ``The part-time players like Deon Apps, who was the best on the field against Cronulla, play well knowing that they have these senior players around them. ``We were used to that last year and that’s what we’re missing this year.’‘
