LOSS 13-16
The South Sydney Rabbitohs have suffered another heartbreaking defeat, this time at the hands of competition front-runners the St George Illawarra Dragons, 16 points to 13, at ANZ Stadium. 22,238 Members and supporters watched Dragons’ centre Mark Gasnier score in the 71st minute of play to snatch the win from the grasp of the Rabbitohs who fought so hard to put themselves in a position to knock off the competition leaders. The loss was not helped by some tough calls from the referees throughout the contest, a number of which put the Rabbitohs on the back foot when they should have been in a much healthier position. The Rabbitohs hit the lead early when captain Roy Asotasi scored his maiden try of the season. In the fifth minute, Colin Best put his captain into a gap with a short ball, with the number ten touching down under the posts. Chris Sandow converted to give the Rabbitohs a six-nil lead. The video referee then awarded Dragons’ winger Brett Morris a try in the 27th minute to reduce the deficit to two points, a score line that would be carried into the half time break. The defensive efforts of both sides in the opening 40 minutes were very strong, with Sam Burgess forcing a turnover from Jamie Soward in the 18th minute and the Rabbitohs’ scrambling defence preventing a number of Dragons’ scoring opportunities. Nathan Merritt pulled off a try saver on his opposite number Morris in the 33rd minute, and the red and greens successfully defended three consecutive sets of six on their own line two minutes later to hold the Dragons at bay. The Rabbitohs skipped further ahead in the second half when five-eighth John Sutton crossed in the 47th minute of play. He straightened up the play after the Rabbitohs were looking for a chink in the Dragons armour, and he beat three defenders to score. Sandow converted to give the Rabbitohs an eight-point buffer. Dragons winger Jason Nightingale was then awarded a try by the video referee in the 51st minute and Soward’s conversion took the score to 12-10 in favour of South Sydney. A penalty goal to Soward in the 60th minute leveled the scores, but the Rabbitohs skipped ahead again when Sandow potted a 25 metre field goal to give the Rabbitohs a one-point lead 15 minutes short of full time. The Rabbitohs looked to be on top and some brutal defence from that man Burgess again kept the energy high in the Rabbitohs team. But the stake through the heart came in the 71st minute of play when the Rabbitohs’ defence lapsed for half a second and the Dragons were able to make a bust up the right hand side of the field on the fifth tackle, Mark Gasnier finishing off a 60 metre play to steal the lead and the win. Rabbitohs Head Coach John Lang spoke out in the post-match media conference saying he thought the Rabbitohs were not getting the ‘rub of the green’ with some refereeing decisions. “I’m very disappointed in the result tonight,” Lang said. “But I want to say that I thought we got some really rough calls. By treating people and referees with respect, it isn’t proving to be very successful. “The call on Sam Burgess being ruled to be lying on the tackled player too long after completing a dominant tackle is one example. It made our job more difficult.” Lang’s frustration was evident when talking about the game. “I’ve never bagged the referees in over 300 games,” he said. “If you wait for the wheel to turn, it doesn’t turn. “I was rapt in our effort. It was a wholehearted display. But then we let them off the hook. “I’m not blaming the referees for our loss. I just feel that I’ve got to the stage that I have to say something. “I think the referees feel the pressure when comments are made, and as a Club we play with discipline and respect the referees, but what should be an advantage for us is proving to be a disadvantage.”

NYC Round 19
v St George_Illawarra
Fri Jul 16, 5:15pm
WIN 16-12
Vaivai was a late withdrawal, with Judd starting center. In the Toyota Cup match, the South Sydney Rabbitohs maintained their position at the top of the competition ladder with a gutsy 16 points to 12 victory over the St George Illawarra Dragons at ANZ Stadium. A double to centre Blake Judd secured the win for the home side, but it was their defence that truly won them the game. The Rabbitohs sustained plenty of pressure throughout the match, limiting the Dragons to just the two tries.

v Shellharbour
Ron Costello OvalSun Jul 18, 3:00pm
WIN 32-10
Late changes Mark Talanoa out and Stevens came in on the wing. Tyrrell was out and Dean Webster came into the starting line up at lock. Tawha dropped off the bench. The North Sydney Bears have remained in touch with the top eight with a solid and ultimately dominant win against a hard working Shellharbour City Dragons 32-10. At a sun drenched Ron Costello Oval it was the Dragons who were in position to score for the majority of the first half. However it was the Bears who (via some clever footy) scored two tries to one. It was 23 minutes of the Dragons on the attack and Norths turning over possession before the Bears scored from 30 metres in their half. Eddie Paea effectively ducked and weaved and ultimately found an easy gap in the Dragon’s line and had plenty of time to pass to Shaune Corrigan to score. Eddie Paea converted and it was 6-0 to Norths. Shellharbour City’s try came in the 35th minute in the left corner of the in-goal. Bears winger Curtis Johnston scored the first of two tries right on the 40 minute mark. Curtis did well to score off a cross field kick. Curtis was unlucky not to have scored earlier in the half after setting a blistering pace down the left of field only to be brought to heel by Shellharbour. Halftime - North Sydney 10 - Shellharbour City 4. The second half was a different kettle of fish. Norths dominated in attack. Successful with first and second phase play, the Bears forwards shined and a Bears try came within the first four minutes. In a terrific individual try, Jamie Simpson jumped and caught the ball from the Dragons kick, ran, dived and stretched out his arm to place the ball on the try line. Eddie Paea was successful with the conversion and the Bears were 16-4 in the lead. Two tries in quick succession to Matt Hunt and Brock Molan who strolled in under the posts, brought the lead up to 28-4. The final try to the Bears was the second for Curtis Johnston. Following up on a grubber kick through to score and make it 32-4 after 63 minutes. But the Dragons had the last word, an easy try and conversion bringing the final score to 32-10. It was a great performance across the board for the North Sydney Bears. Some of the highlights were – the halves combination of Eddie Paea and Jarryd Hogan, Curtis Johnston and Jamie Simpson’s tries, a great ankle tap tackle by Jaiman Lowe and an aggressive performance from the forward pack.
