LOSS 12-32
The South Sydney Rabbitohs have fallen to the Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs by 32 points to 12 at ANZ Stadium tonight (Friday). 15,312 Members and supporters saw the Bulldogs score five tries to two, with Rabbitohs halfback Chris Sandow scoring both of his side’s four-pointers. The Bulldogs got away to a good start when winger Bryson Goodwin crossed in the left hand corner after a grubber kick from halfback Brett Kimmorley in the third minute of play. Goodwin converted his own try to send his side out to an early six-nil lead. Fetuli Talanoa had a chance to score in the seventh minute however he tip-toed a bit too close to the sideline and the video referee ruled no try. Both sides’ loose handling was costing them scoring opportunities, but the Rabbitohs’ halves were looking dangerous when attacking in the Bulldogs half. The ‘Dogs scored again in the 21st minute when quick hands found Steve Turner in the right hand corner. Goodwin converted from the sideline to give his side a 12-point advantage. The Bulldogs made an error which the Rabbitohs finally capitalised on in the 28th minute. From the scrum feed, Issac Luke jumped out from lock, drew the defence and passed to Chris Sandow, who dummied and wove his way to the line to score. Luke converted to reduce the deficit to six. The Bulldogs kicked away again four minutes before the break with Chris Armit scoring a soft try, giving the Bulldogs an 18-6 lead at the break. The Rabbitohs had opportunities to score in the first half but did not capitalise on the Bulldogs’ mistakes. Both sides were suffering from loose handling in the slippery conditions. The Bulldogs scored first in the second half when Goodwin kicked a penalty goal in the 45th minute, after Sam Burgess was put on report for a tackle on Ben Barba. Sandow scored his second try for the match in the 49th minute when he chased through his own chip kick close to the line. Luke Patten failed to kill the ball and Sandow raced through under his guard to touch down. Issac Luke converted to reduce the deficit to eight points. The Rabbitohs were defending stoutly, with Sam Burgess affecting five tackles in one set of six, and John Sutton holding up Dene Halatau over the line remarkably in the 57th minute of play. The Bulldogs were the next to score in the 67th minute, a Kimmorley chip kick leading to a Luke Patten touch down. Goodwin converted to give the Bulldogs a 14-point advantage. The Rabbitohs threw everything at the Bulldogs in the final stages of the match, but loose handling and quality defence thwarted any scoring opportunities coming to fruition. The Bulldogs scored a final try to Josh Morris in the final seconds to stretch the final score line to 32 points to 12 The Rabbitohs tried hard throughout the match, but loose carries and an inability to pounce on Bulldogs’ mistakes left them behind on the scoreboard at full time.

LOSS 16-22
Cossgrove dropped off the bench. The Newtown Jets have completed a clean sweep to claim the Frank Hyde Shield for 2010 with a 22-16 win over North Sydney. A slippery North Sydney Oval was a key feature of the Friday night fixture with the Bears edging out the Jets in the error stakes, with the match featuring ex Bears, Chris Tuatara-Morrison and Liam Foran. North Sydney scored first with fullback Andre Itula running down the left of field to score. Eddie Paea converted and Norths lead 6-0. Newtown hit back at the ten minute mark off a bomb. The try, scored by Chris Tuatara-Morrison, was converted by Chris and the scores were set at 6 all. The wet weather took its toll with some poor handling from both sides, and another quarter of footy passing before Newtown scored via forward Brad Barrett. The Jets would have been pleased going to the break with a 10-6 lead having commendably defended their try line on a number of occasions in the first half. North Sydney’s hopes were dashed early in the second stanza when the Jets fullback scored and with the conversion they grabbed a lead of 16-6. Ten minutes in the Bears were on the attack and looked like having to turn over possession, but Bears forward Zeb Tawha saw a chance and ran in between the posts. With the conversion by Eddie Paea it was 16-12 and game on once again. Chris Tuatara-Morrison received a penalty kick and was successful as Norths were reduced to 12 men for ten minutes after forward Craig Stapleton was sin binned. Newtown scored soon after via their winger Troy Savage and extended the lead 22-12. However Norths finished well with a try to halfback Jarryd Hogan to close the lead 22-16 and were on the attack as the final bell sounded. The North Sydney forwards really stood up in this match with Matt Hunt, John Kaifoto and Brock Molan standing out.
