WIN 34-30
The South Sydney Rabbitohs have turned in one of the most courageous performances in recent memory to defeat the Wests Tigers 34 points to 30 at ANZ Stadium tonight (Saturday). Highlighted by a three-try performance by centre Dylan Farrell in his NRL debut, the Rabbitohs scored in the final minute of golden point extra time to record their tenth victory of the 2010 season. The Rabbitohs were down 28 points to 12 after 50 minutes, but fought back to level with the scores at 30-all at the full time siren. The match started terribly for the Rabbitohs with Chris Sandow’s kick off going out on the full. From the ensuing set, the Tigers scored through Blake Ayshford to give the visitors a 4-nil lead. This early setback sparked the Rabbitohs into action with Jason Clark, Jaiman Lowe and Farrell all dishing out some heavy defence in the first ten minutes. The Rabbitohs struck back in the 14th minute when Farrell scored his first try of the night. The Rabbitohs made the most of a repeat set of six, spinning the ball wide right to Farrell. Farrell took four defenders head on, charging over to score. Chris Sandow converted from out wide to take a two-point lead. The Tigers went on to score twice more in the first half, once to hooker Robbie Farah in the 24th minute and another time through winger Lote Tuqiri in the 34th minute, The Tigers led 16-6 at the break and looked the goods, making the most of their opportunities to lead by ten. The Rabbitohs came out in the second half and scored almost immediately, completing the first set in the 41st minute with a quality kick that looked destined to be a 40/20. Fullback Beau Ryan did marvellous job to keep the ball in play, however none of his teammates backed him up, leaving a flying Fetuli Talanoa to scoop up the unguarded ball to score. Sandow converted from the sideline to reduce the deficit to four points. The Tigers struck back almost immediately when centre Chris Lawrence scored a try from a wayward offload from Garret Crossman. Five minutes later prop Keith Galloway scored a bizarre try under the posts, and the two conversions from Benji Marshall gave the Tigers a 28-12 lead with half an hour remaining on the clock. The Rabbitohs were not done with yet, with Farrell crossing for his second in the 53rd minute. A sensational one-handed grab of the bouncing grubber kick from Sandow gave him his second four-pointer, and Sandow’s conversion reduced the lead to the half time advantage of ten points. The Rabbitohs found a new charge of energy, and a big hit by Nathan Merritt on Chris Lawrence in the 59th minute fired up his team mates. The tackle looked legal from the numerous replays played on the big screens at the ground, yet the referees penalised Merritt for the tackle and placed him on report suggesting the tackle was too high. Marshall kicked a penalty goal to give the Tigers a two converted try advantage. In the 64th minute of play, defensive pressure from Merritt forced a mistake from Tuqiri in front of his own posts, and from the ensuing scrum and patient play, Sandow held up a pass and put fullback Rhys Wesser through a gap to put the Rabbitohs back in contention. Sandow again converted from out wide put the Rabbitohs back in the game, down 30-24. A Rabbitohs error from the kick off put themselves under pressure, but Jamie Simpson pulled off a try-saving tackle to keep his side in the game. The video referee denied Tigers outside back Mitch Brown a try in the 70th minute, and a 72nd minute field goal attempt from Marshall was ruled to have missed. Three minutes from full time, Rabbitohs five-eighth John Sutton scored a crucial try in the context of the match. The Rabbitohs earned a repeat set from a great kick/chase. The ball was swung left and the powerful Sutton carried three players over the try line to score. With the Rabbitohs’ season on the line it was up to little halfback Chris Sandow to slot the conversion, and he kept his perfect record for the night in tact with a excellent kick under mountains of pressure. In the final minute, Sandow took a shot at field goal from long range, but the kick missed and the scores were locked at 30-all after 80 minutes. The Rabbitohs kicked off in golden point and two minutes in to the first stanza Sutton went down with a dislocated right shoulder. Sandow had two shots at field goal from very long range but both failed to secure the win. In the second half of extra time the Tigers had a chance to win with a Marshall field goal but he could not guide the ball between the posts for the win. Sandow had another crack at a one-pointer, but again it was waved away. In the 89th minute of the thrilling match, the referee awarded the Rabbitohs a penalty for a high tackle by Beau Ryan on Chris Sandow, enabling the Rabbitohs to get out of their end and make valuable field position, for what every one of the 23,298 Members and supporters at the ground believed would be another field goal attempt. But the Rabbitohs surprised everyone when, in the 90th minute of the match, they threw the ball around, eventually getting the ball out to the right hand flank with after a great bust from Wesser up the middle of the field, finding debutant Dylan Farrell to register his hat-trick and the miracle victory to the underdog Rabbitohs. The scenes of jubilation spread for the north-east corner of the ground where the Rabbitohs players piled on top of each other, right through the stands and the thousands of Rabbitohs Members and supporters who just saw their side recover from the 16-point deficit well into the second half to record a gutsy 90-minute victory. Unfortunately for the Rabbitohs, five-eighth John Sutton will miss the remainder of the season having dislocated his right shoulder, but the joyous scenes on the field, in the stands and in the dressing rooms will lift the spirits of the entire Club as the team works its way towards a semi final berth. Rabbitohs Head Coach John Lang was full of praise for his 17 players tonight. “That’s one of the best wins I’ve been associated with,” Lang said proudly. “We made some silly errors and made life hard for us, even right from the kick off, and I thought we got a couple of rough calls at crucial times, and I don’t think I’ve ever seen an injury toll like we’ve got, and we got more tonight. “We said before the game that we didn’t want to put up some sort of token good effort and come with everyone patting us on the back saying we tried hard. We were out there to win the game and I thought that’s the best thing, the boys just never gave in, right to the very end. “I didn’t even know who’d scored. Dylan only got called into the side today, so to score three tries on debut is a dream for him.” Rabbitohs captain Roy Asotasi was happy with the two points. “We all spoke about everyone doing their job. Full credit to our boys, we just hung in there and just kept doing our job and we came away with the win,” Asotasi said. “It was tough, but we’re happy with the two points. “We had plenty of belief in the side. A lot of people said we had injury tolls, but we weren’t using that as an excuse. “There were 17 blokes named to play tonight and everyone went out there and did what was asked of them.” Lang added that the team just needs to keep winning to make the semi finals. “I don’t even know where it leaves us to be perfectly honest,” Lang said. “All I know is that we have to keep winning games of footy. “Hopefully we get a few blokes back next week. ‘Crocks’ (Michael Crocker) we’re hoping is back next week and Luke Capewell, Sam Burgess and Junior Vaivai. We’re running a bit short of forwards but we get a few back as well to be back in contention.” Lang says this win could shape the Rabbitohs season. “I think it’s a defining moment for us,” Lang said. “We said that before the game. We’ve blown some games we should have won, three games in particular “Some I think we’ve lacked as a Club, and it’s because we haven’t had success for such a long time, is that belief in those crucial situations, and I really think tonight is going to help it come. “It was real determination and it was a tremendous effort.” Lang said Dylan Farrell has a big future in the game. “Dylan’s one of the guys, one of the really good young players, that we’ve got at the Club,” Lang said. “We’ve got a few of them coming through our Club. He played SG Ball then had a couple of years in the NYC, and he’s one of the really good players coming through our Club. “He didn’t seem to be that nervous. He’s pretty quiet, very determined.” Lang also made mention of Jaiman Lowe who played his 100th NRL game tonight. “Some of staff upstairs were saying we needed to get someone more attacking on when we trying to score that try,” Lang explained. “He was going along like a good old plough horse and I knew he wasn’t going to make a mistake and he was going to help us get that ball down the other end of the field. “He copped a bit of an injury and that’s why I replaced him, but hopefully he’ll be right for next week.” A humble Dylan Farrell found it difficult to describe the winning try or the feeling of making his debut. “I can’t really remember it, or put it into words,” Farrell said after the game. “The ball got to Shaune Corrigan and he somehow got that hectic pass to me. I don’t know how he got to me but I just chased and it paid off. “I only found today at 12:30 that I was playing so I was alright through the week because I didn’t know, but all the boys talked me through it. I was a little bit nervous but it was alright. “I can’t explain it (the feeling when he planted the ball down for the winning try). The crowd, it all gave me goosebumps. I can’t explain it. “Langy told us before the match that we need to get more belief in ourselves. He doesn’t want to hear about who’s in and who’s out. The people that are playing need to step up and that’s what we did tonight.”

v Wentworthville
Ringrose ParkSun Aug 8, 3:00pm
LOSS 24-50
Itula, Talanoa, Corrigan, Simpson were out with Mclean at fullback, Stevens on the wing and Deon Apps and Tawha in the centers. Nightingale moved into the second row, and Nansen and Zrieka were added to the bench. Wentworthville, in the west of Sydney put on a beautiful Sunday afternoon as a big crowd witnessed a sensational match of league between the Magpies and the Bears in the NSW Cup. Climaxing at the 45th minute mark with a 20-20 score line, the possession favoured the Magpies for the most part, however the Bears did more with their opportunities in a rough and tumble match. Wenty’s sizable pack was hard work for a North Sydney side minus their South Sydney players, but the Bears forwards worked double time and kept their team in the game until the Magpies ran away with a win in the last 15 minutes. A high scoring first half saw Wentworthville first to score after only 5 minutes but Norths hit back after 10 with a Brock Molan special and the score was 6-4 in favour of Wenty. Wenty scored 2 consecutive tries in 10 minutes. The first from a scrum win and the other after a sustained period of attack against the Bears, giving the Magpies a lead of 14-4. Then Norths forward Marty Field did well to dive and stretch to place the ball on the try line next to the posts after great ball movement from the Bears. Norths Eddie Paea converted for a 10-14 score. Wentworthville scored next before Norths winger Curtis Johnston scored the first of a hat trick of tries as they hit the sheds with Wenty in the lead 20-14. The Bears began the half in spectacular fashion with Curtis Johnston showing great skill and judgment to grab and score in one motion off the a high ball and with Eddie Paea’s conversion leveled the scores at 20-20. But the Magpies then scored 5 successive tries exploiting a Bears weakness on the left and surged in front 46-20. Curtis Johnston’s third try was actually his fourth attempt having been disallow one earlier in the half. He grabbed the 4 points after rushing into position to take advantage of good ball movement and score in the left corner. Wenty’s final try came in the 75th minute. The final score 50-24 belied a courageous performance from the Bears.
