LOSS 38-24

This match was the last match of the weekend being played on Sunday evening. For Souths to make the semi-finals they needed Canberra or Manly to lose. As the weekend unfolded Souths semi-final hopes once again like in 1980 hanged on other performances. Canberra beat Brisbane on Friday and all Souths supporters were glued to the radio listening the events at Brookvale. Canterbury came back from behind to win a close match by 6 points. This meant that Souths players and fans knew as they entered teh ground that Souths could make the 2010 semi-finals if they beat the top of the table Dragons by 5 points. It was game on. But it was not to be. South Sydney Rabbitohs fell at the final hurdle in their quest for eighth position on the competition ladder, going down to the 2010 minor premiership-winning St George Illawarra Dragons 38 points to 24 at WIN Jubilee Oval in front of 18,274 supporters. The Rabbitohs managed to get 24 points past the best defence in the League tonight, but three tries to Ben Creagh in the first 17 minutes proved to be the difference between the two teams. The Dragons came out on fire in the first half, with second rower Creagh scoring the first three tries of the game in the sixth, ninth and 17th minutes. The Dragons making metres at will and were attacking the right edge of the Rabbitohs with great success. The Saints extended their lead to 20 in the 25th minute when Kyle Stanley slotted a penalty goal. The Rabbitohs struck back in the 28th minute when winger Fetuli Talanoa scored in the left hand corner. The Rabbitohs were handed a repeat set deep in Dragons’ territory, and the ball was swung wide to the left, with David Taylor throwing the cut out pass to Talanoa to score. Chris Sandow converted from the left hand touchline to take the scores to 20-6. In the 32nd minute, Dragons’ winger Brett Morris showed lightning speed down the left hand touchline to score, and Stanley’s touchline conversion gave the Saints a half time 26-6 lead. The Dragons’ were just too good for the Rabbitohs in the first 40 minutes, constantly getting the red and greens on the back foot. When the Rabbitohs had the ball in good field position they looked dangerous, but the final pass all too often went to ground to leave the Dragons with a healthy half time lead. For the Rabbitohs, Sam Burgess was throwing everything at his opposition in both attack and defence. When Dave Taylor came on the field he added some spark to the South Sydney side, but the Dragons were targeting the Rabbitohs’ right edge in defence with great affect. South Sydney opened the second half stronger than they finished the first, mounting a couple of attacking raids in the first five minutes of the half. With both sides traded some heavy defence, and the Rabbitohs threw everything at the Dragons. From Sam Burgess torpedo bombs to short goal line drop outs, the Rabbitohs were trying desperately to find a gap in the St George Illawarra defence. But they couldn’t find it, and the Dragons were the first to score in the second half when fullback Darius Boyd scored in the 56th minute, again down that left channel, to give the Dragons a 26 point buffer. The Rabbitohs were next to score when Jamie Simpson attacked that left channel again, an inside ball from Colin Best in the 61st minute setting up the score. The try was scored on a repeat set after Beau Scott was put on report for an elbow to the jaw of Sandow. South Sydney scored on the next set, after a long break from Luke Capewell and some solid hit ups from Burgess and Jaiman Lowe. The ball was swung right in the 64th minute, with an inside ball from Merritt giving centre Dylan Farrell enough space to carry three defenders over and touch down centimetres in from touch. Sandow nailed the kick from the right hand touchline to reduce the deficit 14 with 15 minutes left in the game. The Dragons sealed the win with a bizarre try to Matt Cooper in the 68th minute. A ball that bounces forward off Jarrod Saffy’s head was cleaned up by Cooper behind the line, touching down to score. Eddy Pettybourne crossed for a short range try in the 76th minute, but it was all too late for the red and greens on foreign soil tonight. Front rower Sam Burgess was the Rabbitohs best tonight, constantly attacking with great vigour, and his defence was even more punishing at times. The loss ends the Rabbitohs run for 2010, with the red and greens finishing in ninth position on the ladder at the end of 26 rounds.

NYC Round 26

v St George-Illawarra

Sun Sep 5, 4:45pm

WIN 47-22

Team was 1-17. In the Toyota Cup, the South Sydney Rabbitohs have wrapped up the minor premiership with 47 points to 22 victory over the St George Illawarra Dragons at WIN Jubilee Stadium. After a poor first half which saw the red and greens trail by two at the break, the Rabbitohs turned on the afterburners to run in six unanswered second half tries to take top spot on the premiership ladder at the end of the regular season. James Roberts scored a hat trick and Kennedy Pettyborne a double in the win, sealing the minor premiership for the South Sydney side.
