LOSS 29-40
Despite a brave comeback in the second half of their round one fixture, the South Sydney Rabbitohs fell 40 points to 29 to the Sydney Roosters at the Sydney Football Stadium tonight (Friday). A crowd of 28,703 watched the Rabbitohs trail 28-6 after 48 minutes of the game, before piling on four tries and a field goal to snatch an unlikely lead with only seven minutes to go. Unfortunately the men in cardinal and myrtle could not hold on for the win. Rabbitohs started the game strongly, earning a repeat set with a great kick chase from Dave Taylor and Greg Inglis, before holding up Roosters hooker Mark Riddell over the line. From the ensuing play, Braith Anasta posted the first points for the Roosters, despite the video referee checking the try for a possible knock on. The Rabbitohs scored in the 16th minute when five-eighth John Sutton scored. The Rabbitohs received a repeat set after an error from Shaun Kenny-Dowall. A long ball from Chris Sandow to the right found Sutton who carried three defenders over the line to register the four-pointer. Sandow converted to level the scores at six-all. The Rabbitohs had a strong first 20 minutes with Sutton looking sharp and captain Roy Asotasi strong in defence. But from that point on the Roosters dominated the first half. Tries to Anthony Minichiello, Joseph Leilua and Frank-Paul Nuuausala stretched the Roosters’ lead out to 22-6 at the break. The Rabbitohs were struggling with injury at this point with Scott Geddes injuring his Achilles tendon and Sam Burgess coming off with a shoulder injury. Neither were to return for the rest of the match. South Sydney continued to struggle early in the second half with the Roosters posting first points through winger Sam Perrett. The Rabbitohs then mounted an amazing comeback, scoring four tries in 20 minutes to level the scores at 28-all. The first went to Nathan Merritt who benefitted from some crisp passing by Sandow and fullback Rhys Wesser. With tensions getting high, the teams got involved in some push-and-shove before new recruit Greg Inglis crossed for his first try in the red and green. A pin point cross field bomb from Sandow found Inglis who outleapt two Roosters to score. Eddy Pettybourne was the next to score in the 66th minute when straight, hard running paid off for the second rower. In the 70th minute, a cheeky Chris Sandow scored a 98 metre try after scooping a loose kick from Anasta, out pacing Anthony Minichiello to the corner. The Rabbitohs were full of confidence and with Anasta putting the kick off out on the full, the Rabbitohs were in position to post more points. They just that when Sandow slotted a field goal to give the Rabbitohs one-point advantage with seven minutes to go. The Rabbitohs were down on troops with Ben Lowe leaving the field with a suspected broken foot, and with only one man remaining in their bench rotation, the Rabbitohs were out on their feet. The Roosters managed to get some field position in the final five minutes, with young Rooster Tom Symonds crossing twice to give the home side a 40 points to 29 victory. Rabbitohs Head Coach John Lang said it was a brave performance but it was not up to the standard at which he team needs to play each week. “The comeback was great but there was plenty of bad stuff in there too,” Lang said. “We played well for 20 minutes then went a bit soft. We didn’t drive it home. “It’s the first game of the season, but it seems we’re doing the same things we did last year.” Coach spoke about the injuries to his troops. “Sam Burgess has hurt his shoulder and he will have that checked,” Lang said. “Ben Lowe seems to have broken his foot again, and looks like Scott Geddes has done his Achilles.” Coach Lang said he was happy with new recruit Greg Inglis’ performance. “Greg is like everybody else in that he could have shown more urgency at times but it was a good first outing for him. “Chris Sandow was in everything. He was sharp, he competed well and he kicked well tonight so I thought he had a pretty good game.” Captain Roy Asotasi said it was the Coach that helped spring the team to life in the second half. “John Lang gave us a bit of a spray at half time which we needed,” Asotasi said. “We fell away at the end of the game, but we now have to turn our focus to Canterbury next Sunday.”
Further to this Souths are being investigated for having 14 players on the field, which occurred at the 27 min mark for 4 tackles while they were scrambled to replace injured backrower Sam Burgess. McPherson who came on clearly gives the NRL match official his interchange card, before entering the playing arena.
On Monday morning the National Rugby League issued a $15,000 breach notice to South Sydney for playing fourteen men for four tackles during Friday night’s match against the Roosters. The NRL rules require that all clubs remain entirely responsible for the number of players they have on the field at any time. A review of Friday night’s match shows that the Rabbitohs had already affected two interchanges (the maximum allowed at one time) and believed they were a player short when they approached the interchange official as he returned to the bench. The investigation found South Sydney insisted to the official that an injured player had already left the field and entered the playing tunnel. With play having resumed, the interchange official allowed the replacement, Shannon McPherson, onto the field. Within four tackles (duration one minute) it was realised that Souths had fourteen men and Roy Asotasi left the field. “It is a clear responsibility of the clubs to ensure that they have the correct number of players on the field at any time,” NRL Director of Football Operations, Mr Nathan McGuirk, said today. “Because it is such a fundamental part of the game the NRL has put clubs on notice that breaches of the replacement rules will incur a significant penalty. “The incident should serve as a reminder to all clubs of the importance of ensuring the interchange rules are adhered to no matter how urgent a situation may appear on the field. “Penalties can range from fines to the loss of competition points.” South Sydney will have five days to respond to the breach notice before the fine is imposed.

U20 National Youth Toyota Cup - Round 1
v Sydney Roosters, 5:15pm
WIN 32-28
Place dropped off the bench. In the Toyota Cup, the Rabbitohs claimed their first scalp of the season, coming from behind to knock over the Sydney Roosters 32 points to 28 at the Sydney Football Stadium. Freakish Rabbitohs fullback James Roberts scored a hat trick of tries, two in the first half and the decisive four-pointer with eight minutes remaining in the match. George Burgess did plenty of damage with ball-in-hand in attack and shoulder-in-ribs in defence, with captain Adrian Ha’angana combining strongly with Roberts on numerous occasions to complete the win. Roberts’ three tries were the highlights of the game. His first effort he single-handedly outran six or seven Roosters defenders to score on the right. His second try was set up by a perfectly weighted chip kick from inside his own half, with a flying Roberts collecting the ball on the halfway line and racing 50 metres to score. For his third try, Roberts chipped and chased then grubbered through again to score. Coach Scott Murray will be happy with his side’s comeback and will now prepare for next Sunday’s clash with the Bulldogs at ANZ Stadium.
