LOSS 19-28
A crowd of 18,271 has seen the South Sydney Rabbitohs go down to the Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs 28 points to 19 at ANZ Stadium today (Sunday), after leading by a point with ten minutes remaining in the match. For the second week in a row, the Rabbitohs have held late one-point leads to then go on and let in two late tries and fall at the final hurdle. It was a very tight first half with the both sides locked at nil-all after 20 minutes. It was not until the 22nd minute mark that either side troubled the scorer when Rabbitohs fullback Rhys Wesser crossed in the left hand corner to score the opening try. The ball was swung to the left and found centre Greg Inglis who performed a deft inside ball tap-on to Wesser who scored. Chris Sandow converted from the sideline to take the scores to six-nil in favour of the home side. The Rabbitohs extended their lead when Chris Sandow slotted a penalty goal, taking the lead out to eight points. The final five minutes of the half was all one-sided in favour of the Bulldogs with Jamal Idris and Bryson Goodwin both crossing the stripe, earning their side a 12-8 lead at the break. The Rabbitohs opened the second half strongly when the video referee awarded Nathan Merritt a try in the 43rd minute of play. A cross field bomb from Sandow was spilled in the Bulldogs’ in-goal area with Merritt pouncing on the loose ball just centimetres inside the dead ball line. Merritt backed it up with his second try of the afternoon five minutes later after some great ball movement from his inside men. A John Sutton bomb was taken by returning forward Michael Crocker who offloaded to Dylan Farrell. Farrell attracted a couple of defenders before offloading to Sandow who calmy passed the ball wide to Merritt to score. Sandow’s conversion gave the Rabbitohs an 18-12 lead. The Bulldogs struck back in the 56th minute through five-eighth Kris Keating, levelling the scores at 18-all. With 13 minutes left on the clock, Sandow gave the Rabbitohs the lead by slotting a field goal from in front of the posts, giving the home side a 19-18 advantage. With approximately eight minutes left in the match, Wesser was sin binned for ten minutes for holding down in the tackle, and from the ensuing play rookie Bulldogs centre Tim Lafai scored to give his side a 22-19 lead with six minutes left on the clock. With the Rabbitohs unable to fight out of theit own end and the Bulldogs constantly applying the pressure, Bulldogs captain Andrew Ryan scored in final seconds to give the visitors a 28-19 win. Rabbitohs Head Coach John Lang was succinct in his post match comments. “We’ve again had a lead late in the game and blown it, then let another try in as a bonus,” Lang said. “We’ve got to improve, it’s as simple as that. “I thought Chris Sandow’s field goal was a good option. He took the opportunity presented and to him and it put us in front. “We just need our players to play better. We need to get consistency. I pick what I think is the best side each week and we all need to play well.” Rabbitohs captain Roy Asotasi said his team was hurting after the loss. “The boys are disappointed,” Asotasi said. “I thought we defended well for most of the game, but they kept applying pressure. “We’re responsible for our performance. Johnny can only tell us what we need to do. We’re the ones who have to go out there and do it. We need to get out there and play to our best. “We need to get ready for Parramatta now. It’s a five-day turnaround so we need to get ready for them on Friday night.”

Reserve Grade - NSW Cup Round 2
v Canterbury-Bankstown, Crest Stadium, Sat Mar 19 6:00pm
LOSS 0-28
Dean Webster and Leslie dropped off the bench. The North Sydney Bears began their NSW Cup campaign in Round two against the Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs on Saturday. With a side that boasted 14 players with NRL experience, to North Sydney’s 3, the Bulldogs were far too strong running out winners 28-0. The first half was marked by heavy driving rain. Despite the conditions the Bulldogs were able to score 14 points over the Bears. The Dogs threw the ball around as if it was a dry weather game. They were impressive with their handling in the wet weather conditions. The Bears were unable to gain any momentum and as a result could not cross the tryline, as Canterbury’s defense was rock solid. The Dogs dominated the middle of the ruck and had a better kicking game. The Bears inexperience showed in what was, in fact, the first time that Norths and Souths players have come together as a team. Malcolm Webster at halfback was a threat in broken play in the second half. Brock Molan who came on in the second half was also strong.
