WIN 32-18
The South Sydney Rabbitohs have secured their first two competition points of the season with a resounding victory over the Parramatta Eels, 32 points to 18 in front of 22,153 fans at ANZ Stadium. The Rabbitohs’ left side attack of John Sutton, David Taylor, Greg Inglis and Fetuli Talanoa terrorised the Eels throughout the 80 minutes on the back of a solid platform set by the Rabbitohs forwards. The Eels started strongly, being denied two tries by the referees in the first six minutes. However despite the early chances for the home side, it was the Rabbitohs who struck first. In the ninth minute of play, fullback Rhys Wesser scored the opening four-pointer after some great work from centre Greg Inglis. Inglis beat two defenders and offloaded around the corner to Wesser to score. Chris Sandow converted from out wide to give the Rabbitohs a six-nil lead. The Eels struck back four minutes later through halfback Jeff Robson levelling the scores at six-all. The Rabbitohs edged ahead when winger Fetuli Talanoa crossed for the first of his two tries in the 22nd minute of play. It started with five-eighth John Sutton who got the ball away to Wesser. Wesser then threw an amazing flick pass behind his back to Inglis who drew the defence in and put Talanoa away to score. Another Sandow conversion from the touchline restored the Rabbitohs’ six-point-lead. The Rabbitohs kept putting themselves under pressure with handling errors and mistakes, with the video referee denying Eels centre Ryan Morgan in the 26th minute when Talanoa clumsily grounded the ball in his own in-goal. The Eels eventually struck when former Rabbitoh Chris Walker slipped through the defence to score out wide on the left, with Luke Burt’s conversion locking the scores at 12-all. Both teams continued to pressure each other’s lines, and in the 34th minute of play the Rabbitohs could have dropped behind the eight-ball when hooker Issac Luke left the field with a very heavy concussion after getting his head in the wrong place trying to tackle former Rabbitoh Fui Fui Moi Moi. From the kick off of the second half, it was all the Rabbitohs. The Eels failed to control the kick off giving the Rabbitohs excellent field position in the early stages of the second stanza. From the ensuing play, Talanoa crossed for his second try after hulking second-rower Dave Taylor carried four defenders towards the line, managing to get an arm free to offload to Talanoa who had a saloon passage to the line. Sandow again converted from out wide to give the Rabbitohs a six-point advantage. In the 47th minute of play, Moi Moi collected Ben Ross in a high tackle which was placed on report, and was then marched ten metres and given ten minutes in the sin bin after back-chatting the referee. Chris Sandow slotted a penalty goal to give the Rabbitohs a 20-12 lead with 32 minutes remaining in the match. In the 50th minute, diminutive halfback Sandow came off best in a horrid head clash with Eels forward Justin Horo, and the Rabbitohs were rolling forward full of enthusiasm and confidence. One minute later, Greg Inglis scored his second try in South Sydney colours after another great offload from Taylor around the back of the defence, allowing Inglis to set sail for the line. Sandow converted taking the score to 26-12 with less than half an hour left on the clock. The Rabbitohs muscled up in defence, shutting down every attacking whim of the Eels, including superstar fullback Jarryd Hayne who could not find a way through the Rabbitohs defence. In the 64th minute, Michael Crocker scored a wonderful try. Lock Dave Tyrrell threw a great long-ball to Nathan Merritt on the right wing, giving him space to charge 20 metres up field. Running out of room, Merritt snapped a kick back in-field, with Crocker the man on the spot to juggle the ball into his control and carry a defender over the line to score under the black dot. Sandow converted to extend the Rabbitohs lead to 32-12. The Eels started to mount a comeback when Moi Moi scored a converted try in the 68th minute, but the Rabbitohs were able to hold out the Eels for the final ten minutes to record their first victory of the season.

Judiciary News
Eddy Pettybourne has been charged with a grade two dangerous throw charge for a tackle on Eels centre Ryan Morgan early in the ANZ Stadium encounter. Charge is worth 325 points but a 40% loading for 2 previous indescrtions in the last 2 years, has been applied taking the offence to 455 points. Eddy has no carry over points. He will miss four weeks if he unsuccessfully defends the charge at the NRL judiciary, or three weeks if he enters an early guilty plea, which reduces the charge value to 341 points. Souths has chosen to not fight the charge and will miss 3 games and will have 41 points carry over.

Reserve Grade - NSW Cup Round 3
v Western Suburbs, Campbelltown Stadium, Sat Mar 26 3:00pm
WIN 56-10
Molan and Kaifoto dropped off the bench. A full week of training paid dividends for the North Sydney Bears who flogged Western Suburbs Magpies by 46 points in their NSW Cup rugby league round 3 match on Saturday. The Bears won 56-10 after running in 10 tries to two at Campbelltown Sports Stadium. In stark contrast to the lead-up in their round 2 loss against Canterbury where several players were unable to train due to commitments with Souths, coach Wayne Lambkin had a full squad at his team’s two training sessions on Thursday and Friday. “It definitely made a difference having them for a couple of times during the week and having some one-on-one time with the players,” he said. “During training we were able to get together and set up some plays, structure and shape with people in certain positions.” The Bears led 28-6 at halftime after racing to a 12-0 lead after just six minutes. Centre Taioalo Vai Vai opened the scoring in the third minute when he latched on to a pinpoint cross-field kick from halfback Malcolm Webster. Dashing winger Curtis Johnson finished the match with a double.
