LOSS 0-16
A display that can only be described as two heavyweight fighters going blow-for-blow for 12 rounds, the Rabbitohs went down 16-nil to the St George Illawarra Dragons tonight in a performance that did not reflect the final score line. Despite the 16-point deficit, the game was narrowly won by the Dragons with very little separating the teams at full time. The Rabbitohs were gallant in defeat in front of 22,771 Members and supporters with the Rabbitohs stoutly defending their line and threatening to break the Dragons’ defence open on numerous occasions. The Rabbitohs started the game full of enthusiasm which was demonstrated in their defence. The Rabbitohs were quick off their line and solid in their hits, seemingly catching the reigning premiers unawares. In the ninth minute of play, Rabbitohs second rower Dave Tyrrell breached the Dragons’ defence, reaching out at full stretch to put the ball down on the goal line, or so it seemed. The video referee deemed that Tyrrell had grounded the ball short of the line, and the Dragons were able to defend the set and stop the score. In the 12th minute of play, the Dragons scored the only points of the first half through a Jamie Soward penalty goal. Two penalties prior to that had given the Dragons a piggyback out of their own end, setting up the position for the shot at two points. The Rabbitohs had a couple of promising try scoring opportunities in the first half but poor handling meant the points went begging. The Rabbitohs defence in that first half was the highlight, keeping the Dragons tryless for the first forty minutes. The Rabbitohs were under attack in the opening fifteen minutes of the half but sensational goal line defence, something which has evaded the Rabbitohs in recent times, saw the Rabbitohs hold out three Dragons’ attacking raids. Then it was the Dragons’ turn to defend their own line and they did so as stoutly as the Rabbitohs had previously. The Rabbitohs had a golden opportunity to score with 63rd minute of play, only to see the ball kicked over the dead ball line on the first tackle. It wasn’t until the 67th minute of play that either side was able to cross the opposition’s goal line with Dragons fullback Darius Boyd scoring after a long break from centre Matt Cooper. Soward converted to give the Dragons an unassailable eight-point lead. Five minutes later the Dragons scored again through centre Mark Gasnier, and Soward’s conversion plus another penalty goal late in the game gave the Dragons their 16 points. The Rabbitohs never gave up and fought right until the death. Their defence was outstanding and is not reflected by the 16 points scored by their opposition tonight. If a few more passes stuck then tonight’s game would have been a different story. Head Coach John Lang said: “In the end they were better than us. We had our opportunities but couldn’t get get the points on the board. “It was a really good effort and I thought out attack was outstanding despite not scoring. “Chris Sandow was sharp in attack and his defence was good.”
