LOSS 24-36
The South Sydney Rabbitohs have fallen to the Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs in an away game at ANZ Stadium tonight (Saturday), going down 36 points to 24 in front of 22,352 supporters. The Rabbitohs fought back from a 20-6 half time deficit to get within two points of the Dogs with less than 20 minutes of the game remaining, but the home side found another gear and ran away with, in the end, a comfortable victory. The game could not have started worse for the Rabbitohs with the kick off going out on the full, but the Rabbitohs composed themselves to register the first points of the match. In the fifth minute of play, rampaging second rower David Taylor charged through Trent Hodkinson to score after the Rabbitohs made the most of a repeat set, then peppering the Bulldogs right-hand-side defence. Chris Sandow converted from the left-hand touchline to take the scores to 6-nil. Hodkinson made up for his indiscretion by scoring in the 12th minute of play. In the 25th minute of the game Ben Barba scored his first of two tries, followed by four-pointers to Grant Millington and Michael Ennis. The Rabbitohs trailed 20-6 at the break, courtesy of missed tackles and handling errors, but the Rabbitohs are a team that you cannot count out with forty minutes to go. The comeback began in the 54th minute when Chris Sandow capitalised on repeated pressure in Bulldogs territory. Sandow ran at the line, dummied, palmed off Millington and accelerated through the hole he created to score. He converted his own try to take the scoreline to 20-12. It was Sandow again that set up the next try with a booming 40/20 kick, giving the Rabbitohs a repeat set deep in Dogs territory. From the ensuing play, the Rabbitohs put together a sweeping movement to the left. Debutant fullback James Roberts found Greg Inglis whose quick hands gave Chris McQueen an opportunity to score, an opportunity he would not miss. Sandow converted to bring his side within two. Prop forward Sam Burgess was helped from the field in the 63rd minute of play with an ankle injury, and it seemed to stop the momentum that the Rabbitohs had built. A try to Aidan Tolman for the Bulldogs in the 65th minute restored the home sides lead, and tries to Steve Turner and a second to Ben Barba sealed the game for the Dogs. An 80th minute try to Nathan Merritt gave the flyer his 98th four-pointer in South Sydney colours, but the game was gone by this point. Chris Sandow was in everything tonight and the Rabbitohs seemed to feed off his enthusiasm. If not for some poor misses in defence and some loose handling, the Rabbitohs may have been playing from in front for a large chunk of the match. Sam Burgess left the field in the second half with a syndesmosis-type injury to his left ankle. He will have scans to determine the damage. James Roberts also left the field in the second half with a bone bruising injury to his left forearm. Again, a scan will determine the extent of any damage.
