WIN 31-12
The South Sydney Rabbitohs have broken a three-match losing streak with a resounding victory over the Cronulla-Sutherland Sharks, 31 points to 12, at ANZ Stadium tonight (Friday). A fired-up, Rabbitohs-dominated crowd of 9,363 saw the Rabbitohs score 31 unanswered points to run down a fast-starting Sharks outfit. Halfback Chris Sandow scored two tries in a personal tally of 19 points to help the Rabbitohs to victory. The Rabbitohs made a solid start but it was the Sharks who made the most of the early going, scoring two tries in the first 25 minutes through hooker Paul Aiton and five-eighth Wade Graham to shoot out to a 12-nil lead. The Rabbitohs handling was poor and the players were, at times, ill-disciplined, giving the Sharks every opportunity to mount a big lead. In the 31st minute the Sharks missed a penalty goal attempt from practically in front, an error that Sharks skipper Paul Gallen said turned the match as his players head dropped before the half time break. The Rabbitohs capitalised on the mistake by the Sharks when left winger James Roberts scored his maiden first grade try. In the 32nd minute, centre Greg Inglis made a huge bust down the left hand side, charging 50 metres and drawing the fullback before offloading to Roberts who outpaced everyone to score. Sandows sideline conversion took the teams to the break at 12-6 in favour of the Sharks. The Rabbitohs started the second half in emphatic fashion with five-eighth John Sutton kicking a 40/20 on the back of the opening set of six. The Rabbitohs did not score on that set, but it gave them some much needed field position early in the half. Both sides dished out some heavy defence, before the Sharks spilled a bomb with Inglis recovering the ball, giving the Rabbitohs a repeat set of six. From the ensuing plays, Sutton drifted across to the left in front of the posts, with Dave Taylor straightening the play and charging over to score in the 46th minute of play. Sandow converted to level the scores at 12-all. The video referee denied the Sharks Ben Pomeroy a try after he knocked on over the line. Two minutes later in the 51st minute, Sandow snapped up a Wade Graham pass to race 40 metres to score the intercept try. He converted his own try to give his side a six-point advantage. The Sharks were then attacking the Rabbitohs line, but a one-on-one strip from Issac Luke gave the Rabbitohs the ball. The Rabbitohs had cut out the errors in their game in the second half and made their way back up the field on the back of their tireless forward pack, especially their interchange players. Sandow scored his second try in the 61st minute after he dummied before the line, opening up a yawning gap for him to stride through and score. He converted to give the Rabbitohs a 12-point lead. In the 67th minute Sandow slotted a field goal to give the men in red and green a 13-point lead. The Sharks mounted another wave of attack in the 74th minute, only to be denied when Tim Smith was deemed to have obstructed a Rabbitohs defender. In the 79th minute of play, Rabbitohs winger Nathan Merritt scored his 99th try in South Sydney colours after a clever tap-back inside from Sutton, and Sandows conversion took the score to 31 points to 12. Rabbitohs Head Coach John Lang paid the ultimate praise to three players in particular from his side. I thought Eddy Pettybourne, Shannan McPherson and Jason Clark were magnificent off the bench tonight, Coach Lang said. When they came on the field they turned the game. The South Sydney spirit is alive and well in those guys. They're all South Sydney juniors, and I tell you, that South Sydney spirit it running through those guys. Chris Sandow was terrific for us tonight and he won the man of the match award from the TV, but I thought Clarky was my man of the match. Chrissy is playing great football and we need him to keep going with that form. We need everyone to be playing at that level for the whole 80 minutes. If you only play for 60 minutes like we did tonight you wont beat many teams. But those guys brought energy to our team and it rubs off on you when youre out there. I'm just happy to have got the two points tonight.
