LOSS 6-12
The South Sydney Rabbitohs have gone down in the quintessential arm wrestle in round 11, falling to the New Zealand Warriors 12 points to 6 today (Sunday) at Mt Smart Stadium. Despite it being a low scoring match, Rabbitohs Members and supporters were on the edge of their seats throughout the entire 80 minutes as the Rabbitohs went to the wire with the Warriors on home turf. The Rabbitohs defended their line all afternoon but too many mistakes kept them under pressure throughout the match, meaning they could not mount similar pressure themselves on a consistent basis. It took 34 minutes for the sides to trouble the scoreboard attendant with Warriors halfback Brett Seymour crossing for the only try of the half. The Warriors were denied three other tries in the half by the video referee, plus a number of others by the tough Rabbitohs on-line defence. The Rabbitohs’ desperation in defence was epitomised by an effort by rookie winger James Roberts in the 19th minute when he chased 89 metres to bring Krisnan Inu down one metre short of the line. The second half was also a defensive battle royale with both sides hammering each other in some end-to-end football. In the 55th minute, Rabbitohs fullback Rhys Wesser scored after some great backing up down the left hand side of the field. Dave Taylor, back in the Rabbitohs squad after spending the week with the Queensland State of Origin team, popped an inside ball to a flying Nathan Merritt, playing his 150th game for South Sydney today. Merritt’s offload went to Wesser’s boot, toeing the ball ahead into the in-goal to pounce and score. Chris Sandow converted to level with scores at six-all. The Rabbitohs let the ball go into touch from the kick off, giving the Warriors prime field position, and it was not long before they would post the decisive four-pointer. The Warriors passed the ball around to create space and sent it to the right wing to find Inu who scored. James Maloney converted from the sideline to restore his side’s six-point advantage. Over the final 20 minutes both sides threw everything they had at each other. The Rabbitohs camped themselves down on the Warriors line in the 75th minute after Sandow kicked a booming 40/20. The Rabbitohs had three attacking opportunities in that final five minutes to score and take the game to golden point, but South Sydney could not get the ball across the stripe, giving the Warriors their fifth straight victory. The Rabbitohs’ forward pack worked extremely hard today led by Michael Crocker, Shannan McPherson and Ben Ross. Dave Taylor looked dangerous out on the left and did plenty of early work up the middle to help the Rabbitohs battle the grind in the middle third of the field. The Rabbitohs bench players of Eddy Pettybourne, Jason Clark, Chris McQueen and Nathan Peats all worked very hard when they came on the field.

After 10 minutes Likiliki beat 3 and 4 Bears defenders and then through a speculator on his inside and Ciraldo was Johnny on the spot and despite a stumble at the end he reaches out to score untouched. Stig converts and the Centurions lead 4-10. With 5 minutes before half time the Bears hit back here as Dean Webster get an inside pass about 1m out and burrows his way over. Soon after the break, Norths have gone a long way towards winning here after crossing first courtesy of Aisea Namoa. Webster converts from right in front and it is now 20-10. 4 minutes later the Bears are in again after Bennett Leslie takes a kick that should have been diffused by the Centurions and he scores the easiest of tries. Conversion unsuccessful, 24-10. 15 minutes on the clock and the Bears cross again Blake Judd scores a well deserved try for the Bears and with Websters conversion it is now 30-10. Another try as the flood-gates have open. Websters kick looked way too big but Hawkins does really well to knock it back into the in-goal and Nichols falls on the ball to score. Webster converts and it is now 36-10. Josh Mansour scores his second try, Kick by Florimo was good and it is 42-10. Full-time.
