LOSS 10-22
The South Sydney Rabbitohs have gone down 22 points to 10 to the Penrith Panthers in round 12 of 2011, in atrocious conditions at Centrebet Stadium in Penrith tonight (Monday). A small crowd of only 5,703 braved the wet conditions to watch the Panthers run in four tries to the Rabbitohs’ two. The Rabbitohs were their own worst enemy at times during the match, with handling errors and poor efforts in defence cruelling a number of scoring opportunities. In a first half effort that Rabbitohs Head Coach John Lang described as “terrible”, the Rabbitohs trailed 16-4 after 24 minutes, a lead which the red and greens could not peg back. The Panthers scored in just the fourth minute of play, when Luke Lewis got on the outside of the Rabbitohs right-side defence to score in the left corner. Luke Walsh’s conversion took the home side to a six-nil lead. The Rabbitohs struck back ten minutes later when James Roberts scored in the left hand corner. After regathering a John Sutton bomb, Dave Taylor regathered the ball and threw a miracle ball over his head in traffic to find Roberts. The Panthers scored two quickfire tries in the 20th and 24th minutes to Trent Waterhouse and Adrian Purtell, setting up a 16-4 half time lead. Dave Taylor was the most dangerous of the Rabbitohs’ players, causing havoc down the left hand side of the red and green attack. However, poor handling and some poor defensive efforts cost the Rabbitohs in the first 40 minutes. The Rabbitohs came out strongly in the second half with hooker Issac Luke scoring in the second minute of the second stanza. A scoot from dummy half and spinning away from three defenders was enough to get him over the line. Chris Sandow converted to bring the Rabbitohs within six points with 35 minutes left in the game. The Rabbitohs had a couple of opportunities to score over the next 15 minutes, with the Rabbitohs earning repeat sets in the Panthers’ half in the 55th minute and a long break made by fullback Rhys Wesser in the 59th minute of play. But it came to nought and the Rabbitohs remained behind by six with 20 minutes remaining. In the 71st minute, Panthers fullback Lachlan Coote scored an unusual try after Masada Iosefa mistakenly toed the ball through into the in-goal. The Rabbitohs defence showed a distinct lack of urgency to ground the ball in-goal, thinking the play would be pulled up for a knock on. The video referee ruled the ball was not knocked on and the four-pointer was awarded. Walsh converted to take the scores to 22-10 and victory to the Panthers. Rabbitohs Head Coach John Lang was forthright in his comments after the match. “Our effort in the first half was terrible,” Coach Lang summarised. “The effort just wasn’t there. It’s just not good enough.” Captain Michael Crocker was equally as short with his response. “We’re not playing smart,” Crocker said. “We have a game plan and we’re not sticking to it.”

U20 National Youth Toyota Cup - Round 12
v Penrith, 4:45pm
LOSS 16-18
Late change, Koroisau has replaced Roberts at five-eighth. In the Toyota Cup, the South Sydney Rabbitohs have fallen narrowly to the Penrith Panthers at Centrebet Stadium in Penrith, 18 points to 16 tonight (Monday). Terrible conditions led to a lot of dropped ball from both sides, with the Rabbitohs relinquishing an eight-point second half lead to go down by two at the death. A contentious final try to the Panthers gave them the lead with less than five minutes remaining on the clock.
