LOSS 16-48
The South Sydney Rabbitohs have been unable to back up last weeks thrilling victory with another two competition points this afternoon (Sunday), falling to the New Zealand Warriors 48 points to 16 at ANZ Stadium. 11,208 Members and supporters saw the Warriors dominate the majority of the match, setting up the win with an emphatic first half performance which saw them lead 24-4 at the break. The Rabbitohs began to mount a comeback in the second half, but the Warriors responded repeatedly to record the win. The Warriors led 24-nil after 26 minutes, scoring tries through Bill Tupou (fifth minute), Shaun Johnson (ninth minute), Manu Vatuvei (15th minute) and James Maloney (26th minute). Offloads and kicks led to the Warriors tries and the Rabbitohs were on the back foot early in the match. Four minutes from half time, the Rabbitohs scored their first try through centre Dylan Farrell. The ball went through the hands with a gap opening up in front of Farrell who went on to score. The Rabbitohs began to mount a comeback early in the second half when Chris McQueen scored in the 44th minute. A John Sutton bomb, playing in his 150th game for Souths with the honour of captaining the side today, found McQueen on the left wing, flying high above his opponents to score. Chris Sandow converted to reduce the deficit to 14. The Warriors responded with centre Joel Moon scoring twice in eight minutes to restore their 24-point advantage. Farrell scored his second try in the 62nd minute of play after some Nathan Merritt brilliance set up the try. Merritt was pinned against the touch line, but chose to chip kick over the defence, getting a fantastic bounce to set up Farrells four-pointer. Sandows conversion took the scores to 34-16 in favour of the visitors. Manu Vatuvei scored his second and third tries for the afternoon in the 67th and 71st minutes in identical circumstances. Precise cross field kicks from Maloney found The Beast on the Rabbitohs goal line giving him the opportunity to register a hat trick. A final try to Pita Godinet in the penultimate minute of play finished off the game for the Warriors, who won on the back of good ball control, multiple off loads and accurate kicking. The Rabbitohs missed far too many tackles and could not respond in the same way the Warriors did throughout the 80 minutes.
